I am a big fan of the Gibson 57 classic. They hold up with almost all of the high dollar PAF types. The + is cool for a little more push in the bridge as well. A lot of the top players going for the classic PAF thing use them as well.

Are these what come in the Warren Haynes LP?

Nevermind apparantly he's using the burstbuckers. What do you guys think of those?

They're sterile and weak sounding from the most part IMO. The WCR Goodwood/Darkburst combo sound like they would be just the ticket for you brother. Here is the link:

He used to use the classics and maybe still does. Derek Trucks and Jimmy Herring still use th 57s last I heard. I had some burstbucker pros that I did not care for, the 57 classics sound much better.

What would you guys suggest for super vintagey PAF style tones? The JB in the bridge of my Edwards is actually a little too hot for me. That, and it compresses to much with my OD808.

Alnico II Pro's have been suggested to me, but I dont want to sound like Slash. Although I hear they really let the guitar shine through (clarity). What do you guys think?

Try the Duncan Antiquities...

Steve

I think 57 classics sound great, and won't make you sound like Slash, though its there if you want to. I've got 57 classics in my 335 and burstbuckers in my LP, like both for different reasons.

I've had a Highorder 8.6K AlNi2 pick-up that I didn't like for the bridge position; too much compression in the mids. Turns out it works fine in the neck position.

The 9.6K ( I think) Highorder Maximus AlNi5 works very well in the bridge. Very percussive tight lows and clear mids and highs.

Recently I've put an AlNi5 magnet in an old Dimarzio Superdistortion. Works great; lots of power and oomph without the harshness and grainyness of the original ceramic magnet.

Giga.

I just got a Les Paul and want something similar to a JB with a bit less output so I'm ordering a Wolfetone Fenris for the bridge. Check out the Suhr SSH too. Wolfe at Wolfetone will answer any questions you have and make some good suggestions for you if you email him.

Right now I'm running a Bare Knuckle VHII set in my Standard, which I keep in standard tuning or dropped-D. I run an Anderson H3+ and H1- in my Cinnamon Burst Classic, which I keep tuned down 1/2 a step.

I wouldn't mind trying something different in my Standard because it's just a wee bit too bright/hot in the treble frequencies for some of the stuff I like to play. The VHII set is voiced a lot like the Duncan JB, but the output is only about 9.75K at the bridge. It just doesn't have that nasally sound in the high mids like the JB has.

I know I am in the minority and am a durty metal head, but I actually like the Gibson 500T. It takes most of the "Les Paul" signature sound out of the guitar, but I like 'em. Currently, I have a Tom Anderson Hn3+ in the bridge of mine and the verdict is still out. Some days I love it, others not so much. I am thinking the Hn3+ is too hot for my high gain amp... but might be sick in a more simple master volume amp.

What are you guys using? I have a couple of LPs that could use a change. I have one LP that has a Duncan Pearly Gates set, one that has a WCR Goodwood/Darkburst Combo, and one with a Wolfetone Dr V set. I haven't found suitable ones for my other two LPs just yet.

SH-1 Neck and Bridge w/ RS Guitarworks package...
