Les Paul’s are timeless

I haven’t played tons of LPs; maybe 15 Gibbys plus owning a couple. But the best tone I’ve ever heard out of any of them was from a 79 Greco EG500 that I put a D activator bridge in…that thing had such a deep dark sinister growl…haunts me till this day.

For me, it’s the sonic spot they fill.. A good example is Gary Moore..the difference in his tone between when he’s playing a super Strat and a Les Paul.
 
I always loved a les paul, heres my contribution to the thread.

You have a good eye my friend, slash aged and signed and page 1, theres also a billy gibbons goldtop and pearly gates, aged joe perry 59 and aged ace frehley 59, a couple brazilian 59, and aged zakk

The Zakk & ZZ Goldie were obvious - but the perry59, frehley59, and brazzos, those needed some clarification - thanks for that.

The '56 GT in my pic is a brazzo board as well. Honestly makes no difference in tone, 'least IMHO, but it's the "unobtanium" factor I guess that's making them sound so great...who know.

But stellar collection man, just stellar.

Yep there's no doubting the power and force of the LP tone, over any other guitar design. Can't be denied. Some of my superstrats can approach the high output thickness of an LP; but can't quite get there.

I remember my last singer breaking a string at a show; I gave him my backup Charvel to play and he had to turn his amp down as it was much louder/resonant than the Ibanez he was playing.
LPs are on another level, though.
 
I’ve tried about 5 Les Pauls over the years (2 traditionals, Axcess hard tail, Classic with 50’s neck), 1980 The Paul, and they never stayed. Usually it’s the tuning issues that kill it, or the awkwardness and angles. (I’m a typical Charvel superstrat guy) but you can’t beat that deep sustain and tone you get from them.

However I want to try one more kick at the can on a newer LP just to have one in the stable.

The new Slash standards seem really nice when I tried them. Perfect tone and balance, kind of an in between neck carve that seems beefy but comfortable for fast playing. I don’t care about the Slash part, but they felt and sounded better than the regular Standards I tried in the store. Just something about them that really stands out and works. What do you guys think?

Play a bunch of different examples side by side through the same amp and unplugged. Never ever ever buy a Gibson untried through the mail.

Buy a thick strap. Don’t play your superstrats for a good month or so until you get used to the LP.

Don’t allow yourself to swap pickups for at least a year. If you did step #1 above, they should be a good match for your guitar
