My buddy said this amp is the #1 backline rig. Not a JMP but close.
Its not hard to get 800 tones from a DSL and not hard to get JMP tones from an 800. They're all the same spectrum of flavors.
Same w/a JVM. I could play a JVM for a month and get a different tone everytime.
I will say you want G12M 25 watt Blackback / Greenbacks.
V30's will not cover JMP / Plexi tones.

Yes, and no. Sure, they’re all Marshalls and have that inherent midrange. But playing a 70s Superlead, boosted or not, at volume where you’re trying to control the uncontrollable, and the volume is rattling the windows….might not be everyone’s thing but I love it. 2203….gets most of the way there but not all. NMV Marshalls are like a carnival ride. Scary but fun as hell.

Decibel difference between a 50 watt Marshall & a 100 watt Marshall is 2 to 3 decibels. ymmv

I'll throw another curve in the thread lol.
79 jmp 2203,6550s,clean ch,fx loop installed by " Erickson Audio" WA.
I bought this locally.Previous owner doesn't know much about it.It sounds pretty good, transparent loop and a bit more than stock gain on tap.
Anyone heard of this guy from Washington state and his mods?View attachment 281078

Rick Erickson. The man behind the flanger on Heart's "Barracuda". Knows Fenders and other stock amps well (among other things). I've heard a couple modded Marshalls by him and wasn't impressed.

Tubes / tone woods / pickup magnets & winds / speakers / strings / FX all have a bearing on tone.

Arguably one of the greatest NWOBM templates ever and the rhythm tones on their own have very little kerrang and klank
but in the mix with a full band it's perfect.
All mids
Supposedly 4 hole non MV with treble boosters and MXR distortion +

Ya and I'm sure they had the amp in the room with no head phones letting her rip -NOT!
Really low gain with good mids. Betting they did not even boost the front end of these amp back then?? Anyone know? Prob not

KK & Tipton played Marshall model 1987 NMV 50 watt heads w/ Dallas Rangemaster treble boosters for most of the albums that got them famous.

That's what I hear on the old stuff.. I def don't hear double boosted or Randy Rhoad's level of gain.

NMV Marshall with treble boosters into the bass channel. The info is in a book I have somewhere.
Once they got to Screaming for Vengeance they switched to GK’s.

I remember the old GP Judas Priest issue.
Another reason Tipton sounded so good, was like Randy, he used the MXR 10 Band EQ. At least the time of the interview.
It makes sense because Tipton's tone always stood out from KK's shitty tone.

I read that Glenn used 800s with a Rocktron preamp? But he's quoted somewhere saying they switched to 800s for the Vengeance album. They definitely had a low mid emphasis; a bit darker for a Marshall tone. I had a Voodoo modded 1959RI that sounded very close to that tone.

Probably later on. This book I have somewhere is a compilation of different heavy metal guitarists. The early stuff he says was the treble boosters into the bass channels on the Marshalls. Then SFV they used the GK’s, Always thought that album sounded weird. He may have been wrong on SFV, Maiden didn’t start with the GK’s till Somewhere in Time, same with Rush I think…never really thought Priest had very good tones On any album, Sin after Sin I guess was cool.

Yeah I heard way back about the GK stuff for Somewhere in Time, 1986...Vengeance was 82, Tipton says 800s with preamps in front. Makes sense with TB into the bass side; I can hear that low mid prominence on the earlier albums prior to Vengeance.

I mustve got lucky. This one rips.We opened it up and it's all reversible stuff inside. Very neat and tidy..Just a tiny clean ch board added.definitely a tad more gain too.Tubes are winged c's so that's a bonus.

To get back on track I plugged into my Wizard MC II Mk II last night after a weekend of JMP 2204 bliss and ear ringing :m17:
The MC II is decidedly Marshall in flavor. I will say it's got so many options for highs and lows it is soooo much harder to dial in. As oppossed to the JMP I either run the bass a little below noon with LP or noon with super strat and find the right pre amp gain mids bumped a skosh and every thing else noon -Done!
For the Wizard, once you get it dialed it is a really pristine complex harmonic structure (ch 1) Very pleasing to ears and a definite nod the the British influence.
Ch 2 is just shred mayhem, thick and full of the same just more of it!

I was going to sell it and go all Marshall but the cycle of buy buy buy, panic sell sell followed by regret then look at bank account and think 'wow what can I try next'?................. has to be broken,...Lord help me :p Good news is I'm not missing any meals, just trying to get out of the forest and learn from the past.

The only gig I used it last year -would you all say this is a good Marshall esque tone? I'm on a LP kick now (R9 in bound) So both the JMP and MC II will sound soooo much bigger. At the on set of this band i really wanted a crunch tone and thought I needed the Tele, which I still dig but the LP is so much more massive sounding

MC II Live

Edwards LP with JMP jam. With Mr scary in v2
