let's talk wah's....

Xotic XW-1 has been on my board for several years now. More vocal than a CB or 847, adjustable Q, eq and boost, lighter and smaller footprint as well. I grew up on 847 Vox’s but the Xotic just sounds better. One drawback—a slight/momentary pause/drop on activation that while annoying is workable.

Of course it’s $280. Had the Fulltone and a couple different RMCs I didn’t think were worth the upgrade, I think the Xotic is worth it. But I’m in a Zep tribute, I use my wah a lot lol

I second that for an overall WAH. Lots of options, wide sweep, smooth. My only issue with it is that at times I just can't find the voicing I want for the sound I have in my ear. For that , that mini cry baby just works. It might be the smaller footprint but I find sweet spots so easy on there and it sounds right for that one thing I do - Michael Schenker thing. In fact size of the wah doesn't get discussed but the little guys seem to require less rocking? I don't know how, but they do. I bought what I thought was a better cry baby classic with led and TB etc etc and it doesn't have the mojo the little guy does. But if I am not pretending to be Schenker, xotic all the way.

the 95Q is not .... for some reason I thought it was ....

Cry Baby Junior which came out recently is TB. I have it but will be honest, I LIKE the buffer. My mini owns it because of the assist the buffer adds. I think that buffer is part of the magic if I'm honest.

I haven't bought a wah or looked into newer ones in almost 20 years ..... I still have a few old Dunlops that I modded and love ....
maybe they have gotten smarter with their buffered bypass .... cause back in the day ..... that was the first mod you always did to a crybaby ... bypass the buffer and make it true bypass .

for some reason I keep going back to the bbe wah.....

I like my old Snarling Dogs Super Brawl Whine-O wah. It has 3 wah modes/sounds, clean & dirt, and a boost. With the different options it's a fun "toy" to play with. They seem to be running around $150-$200 right now.

I have one of these in it's original box, if anyone is inspired and wants one now. PM me. I've been thinking about clearing out some excess pedals at home and listing them here, but thought I'd note it here since it came up. Apologies if it's verboten.

It's a great wah with a big boost for a cleanish amp. It's a bit much for me on the gain channel, so I stayed with more traditional wahs, and have used the Duncan rackmount wah most of the time with bigger rigs, and a homemade crybaby for the smaller rigs.

which ones are true bypass? the 95 q isn't...is it?
Dunlop has changed various models over the years. Some are true bypass, some have a buffer, some have nothing. The old ones with nothing are tone suckers, the other two aren't. I use the 95q when I need a wah. The buffer is fine, the switchless is nice, it has a q adjustment. It's not the be-all-end-all wah, but it works for 1-2 songs a night.

I can't speak to most of the other suggestions, but I had a Vox Satriani Big Bad Wah. Long since discontinued, but IIRC it had switchable voicing, switchable inductor, and could add a little dirt if desired.

How about the Dunlop Petrucci wah? It is true bypass and is the rack wah in pedal format. You can do a lot of adjustments for the sound with the trim pots inside the pedal.

Not switchless but I’m happy with my bbe benwah

ive got a lot - Dunlop Slash, Dime, EVH, Petrucci, Cantrell, Hendrix, the Xotic XW-1, a 1998 Buddha Wah (really sweet grind), Fulltone Clyde Deluxe, and after it's all said and done?

i just grab my Crybaby 95Q (like what Vai uses... yes he also has his sig Morley, but he stomps on the 95Q a lot)
