Man, this topic is outright confusing.
Just throw the whole Hi Fi thing out the window and start again.

+1

Lukecurd- "I want an amp that shows off everything and is unforgiving" "I am looking for a VH4 single channel alternative That is aggressive but not over saturated"
I would certainly think Deliverance 60/120 or Splawn Competition or SuperComp.

I agree Deliverance is a single channel tight unforgiving beast that isn't too terribly expensive either.

DAR is pretty much out of business from what I understand.

Hi-fi high-gain means Hughes & Kettner to me as well.

Where the Fawk did you read or hear that Dar is out of biz ????

Hi-Fi = a amplifier that tracks very well and is aggressive and reactive. For example. Modern Rock amps to me cut really well in the mix. Not looking for saturation as much as open percusive attack. A Vh4 ch3 with the gain turn down to down and the master way up or possibly closer to the VHr Ch 2.

Tool
A perfect Circle
Smashing Pumpkins
NIN
Basicly the stuff I grew up listening too. I guess more prog rock.
etc.

I am looking for a VH4 single channel alternative That is aggressive but not over saturated.

From the information you've given, I'd say (again) the VH4, Ultralead, and now the Naked. Tool = VH4. APC = Naked. Smashing Pumpkins = Diezel. NIN = Diezel. I have the exact same tastes as you — 90's rock/metal/prog rock. I think of all the amps mentioned, the original two-channel Rectifier and the Ultralead will be the easiest to get at good prices. The VH4 would nail what you want. But it's more expensive and you said you'd like a single channel version of that sound.

APC has a great sound. Very hi-fi (yeah I hear what you're after). And that would be the Naked. But I think Muse fits in with the sound you're after as well. And they use VH4.

Owned a bunch of Mesa Rectifiers and 5150's. All had a cloudy, saggy, fizzy tone to my ears. I want an amp that shows everything and is very unforgiving.

Played an Einstein and Herbert however it they didn't have the percussive nature of the VH4.

Played/owned all 3 uberschall revisions and the low mids where great but always felt they got lost in the band mix.

Played/owned OD-100 STD, Pt-100, VHT 100 CLX, Rivera K-tre, Laney AOR, etc.

Looking for an amp that doesn't sound Gated but really shows off mistakes but when you pull it on it.
I'd say splawn amps for sure...or a VHT for dry tight unforvingness

I own a quickrod and its very articulate tight dry and focused

If CH 3 of the VH4 is what lifts your skirt, be patient on getting a deal on a used one and be done. You'll end up spending more chasing it in something else. Also a lot of the bands mentioned may use Diezel etc now but they didn't when they recorded their iconic recordings. Mesa, 5150 or a Marshall (probably modded or with pedals). I personally don't care for the high gain in a H&K Tri-Amp. Has a fizziness to the top end. Their inbetween gain tones are pretty damn good though.

I believe Diezel is more of a hi fi sound. I strongly dislike Hi-Fi in a guitar amp. Audio equipment  but not guitar. Guitar should be Lo-Fi.

Interesting thread.

I don't get all the adoration for the VHT UL. It's a "good" amp. I owned and gigged one last year (sold it here). We played modern rock/metal on it. Seemed to do fine. For drop-tuned metal, I MUCH prefer the Engl Powerball II that I currently have and wish I'd have had it when I was gigging the Pittbull.

Oh well... different strokes...

IE: BBE Sonic Maximizer. That's what I think of when I hear Hi Fi and guitar in the same sentence.
Over polished, synthetic, absence of that "real feel", etc.

if you want percussive you basically want a super fast attack no compression and tight

Hi Fi to me is that fast percussive attack ,It almost is solid state in nature its does not have a lot of personality .Its favored for extreme tight metal and riffing but personally i would not call it very tube like in character, Dar is a great metal amp but from any clips I can't say it sounds especially "Tubey" I think a Randall V2 is similar

Tube amps naturally compress and have a warm round tone.

VHT,Splawn would be the more percussive and fastest attack from what I've played.

*** KT88 tubes are what I think you are after .A Splawn Nitro or VHT UL

my herbert and boss 10 band eq together is the shit..........with the 10 band i can make channel ultra tight with the gain all thw ay up.............i push the amp hard then tighten and control it with the pedal, like a restricter plate

I don't get it either, the only time I got a chance to check one out I HATED the way the amp sounded. I generally like Freyette products, especially the D120, but I just couldn't jive with the UL. Way too dry for me, and very sterile sounding. Like you said, different strokes...
