"Little Fighter" Isolated Guitar

Sounds like EMGs through an ADA MP-1. Back then they let the bass guitar carry the low end. Which is why when you add the rest of the mix, this sounds fantastic. I really wish we could have gotten some more Vito.
yes, I went back to the full mix and it all sounds great. It would have been interesting to follow his playing and gear journey to present day

I've always loved the pick attack on this track - any Vito fans know if he used a heavy or medium pick (or what)...also, kinda figured it was an ADA MP-1 but does anyone have an idea what type/model speaker we're hearing mic'd?

Oh man that solo

I was learning that a couple months ago and I just can’t get the speed. What a bad ass Vito was.

My lame attempt, I can’t get my brain to fire fast enough to keep up… insert jokes about age, lack of intelligence, multiple concussions:

The sound bite is phasey which I assume is because of the AI to filter the guitar. Sounds like a low gain ADA preamp channel once again proving that the performance is most important and then how everything sits in a mix. When you add the bass track and drums the whole thing pumps. Pretty cool to see how cleanly Vito played that tune as well. Small harmonies or doubling in spots and that monster solo. Amazing player. Even the lead isn't crazy amounts of gain.

Hard to know because if you have seen some pics of Wagener's studio, he's got stacked cabs with all sorts of speakers in them. tons of mic stands. I also believe they used a particular power amp with the ADA that is not very common but adds that particular mid range tone to the sound. PaulyC will probably have some info on that.. he seems to know quite a bit about this era. ADA MP-1 and BBE sonix maximizer ( for the top end) gets thrown out there a lot just like it did for Nuno on Pronografitti

Damn, miss Vito.

Big Game album was ADA Preamp and McIntosh 2100 power amp, Marshall 4x12 with 30w celestions per Michael Wagner. He also stated it was the same rig used for Skid Row and Extreme during that time frame.

Yeah that track is weird...agreed that there are phase issues probably during the isolation, as I don't hear that in the mix at all. Vito was a good player for sure, not sure his attitude was on the same level.

MCintosh that's it. Man, that first Skid row album and the sound of those leads? Legendary. That to me is one of the best lead tones ever recorded. I thought they were Rivera's pushed with OD-1's though but wouldn't surprise me that they used the "Wagener Formula"

What attitude ? The guy seemed kinda low-key and not particularly obnoxious. What did I miss ?

Vito was bad ass. Saw him live twice. Oh man....i always wonder what he would have put out if he kept playing through the years...

Slave to the Grind was the Rivera M100.

I may be wrong, but I took that as he didn’t have the fiery attitude to keep going in the business.

That's my sense of it as well. Band conflicts and all of the red tape that goes with trying to be successful. It didn't take much of that to suck all of the joy out of it for him. At a certain level, sometimes (perhaps oftentimes), the music itself becomes the least important part of keeping the boat afloat.

I think Vitto was in it entirely for the love of music and guitar. Not unlike some pedal builders, some of whom are amazing, passionate craftsman, but who have zero stomach for the business aspect of it.
