This is way cool, early Van Halen great footage of their first tour. The end of the show is killer, crowd goes crazy. when the roadies come out and start taking down the equipment there is a huge BOO who would want to follow that back then.

Fukin' A!

Black Sabbath to Van Halen... You're fired!  Seriously though, I've forgotten just how awesome these guys were.

I saw them for the first time 7 months after this show. Blew my socks off and they blew Aerosmith (who came on after them) off the stage.

Damn they were so good.

Did they go into Bottums up there at the end...im certain I heard it...right before they closed and the roadies got boo'd.

Good god that was great!!
Thanks for the posting!!

WOW! Talk about bringing it onstage! Can you just imagine tuning up and getting ready to go on after that?!

Really was great. Eddie is/was a monster player.

Anyone else think the tone got better when he switched to the destroyer?

Yes that was epic and NO I would not want to play after them during that tour. Ed's tone and playing was on fire.

...it was all good to me, but yes, i hear it. I loved how at the end of eruption he ran to the stack, and dialed in the tape delay... you know way the hell back in 1978, year of our lord, the young people had to be wondering what-in-the-actual-fuck-is-that!!

I saw them at the Nassau Coliseum opening for Black Sabbath in '78.
Imagine, at that time, all we heard were a few songs on the radio. No Internet, no Youtube. We saw what's in the vid. A band absolutely firing on all cylinders. We took off during Sabbath's set. All it was was painfully loud.

Edward has the most radical method of alternate picking I've ever seen. He pivots his forearm at the elbow; leaving his fingers, hand, and wrist locked! I've tried it many times, and can't get anywhere close to useable. I've never seen anyone use this method; other than Edward Van Halen. I can only assume this isn't something practiced, and is part of his bag of gifts. He uses typical wrist stroking method, of course. In the clip, watch him alternate between techniques. Amazing!

Thought #1: WOW

Thought #2: COCAINE!

But yeah. Thanks for sharing. Amazing.

Again....
Could you imagine trying to go on stage
AFTER THAT?!!?
