I've never been able to get any delay to sound good in front of a distorted amp. Anyone have a clip where one sounds good?

All of Vlad's marshall clips with delay are in front of the amp.

I have never had success either. It does not make "logical" sense that it could work well in front of a high gain amp. Maybe and old Marshall...??
I dunno. I've never been able to do it.

I've listened to some of his clips, don't recall if there was any delay or not. I like a medium length delay, sometimes tap tempo-ed to play to. In the front doesnt have that clear delay sound I like. If an amp is set pretty clean I don't mind it, but then it needs a pedal in front to get distortion....

I don't think so either....either a loop or slaving is the only way I can get delay to work the way I want it.

It definitely won't be as clear, obviously. And you have to be more judicious with it. The more delay the sloppier it gets. But me personally I think I prefer it a little furry/sloppy compared to a pristine digital delay sound. That sounds too unnatural to me. But I guess I'm in the minority on that.

You own tape echos and you're asking us what delay sounds good in front of a JCM 800?!? :D

Dude, the freaking tape echos are AWESOME!!!!

Thats what Ive experienced, used to drive me nuts. I don't think you are in the minority, there are lots of guys that like that type thing. I like the really clear more ambient delay. Playing in harmony with it is really fun.

Yeah, but they are noisy. ;)

I figured I would ask since I dont use many pedals... :)

Well I use a MIJ Ibanez AD-9 in front of my Superbass and it sounds great. Hell, I think the Boss DD-3's sound pretty good in front of a Marshall as well. But the Ad-9 definitely sounds warmer and more vintagey. Problem is it doesnt have much delay time. But if all you need is slap back it works perfectly IMO. :)

Dave!

Since you have all the tools, why arent you slaving? It will make your delays sound like gold!!

neither have I. What is exactly PPIV? I have a JCM800 from 82' thats stock and had a tube buffered effects loop put into it years ago and my echoplex's and hughes Ketner replex sound terrific through it. no question.

It's funny Ralph.
Over the years I have tried one amp's preamp section into another's output section etc... but never tried the whole wet dry rig slaving thing with a good fx unit. If I had roadies, it's definitely the way to go for sure!

Kw

You know what the reall asskicker was for me? I used to slave my amps all the time but 9 out of 10 times, I was the roady! It was insane lugging all that crap around but it did sound huge lol!

Its a type of master volume that goes right after the phase inverter and before the power tubes. They seem to be the rage at the moment. I messed with those years ago and never liked them. Its the same type that Marshall is using in the VM amps.

A good buffered FX loop is the way to go for me. Slaving works too, but there is so much more stuff to carry around.

Thats why I quit doing it....too much stuff. At least we had roadies! The other gtr player and I both did the slaving thing....ah the days of 5 4-12's three heads, rack, JC 120 etc

Slaving back in the day

i gotcha. I love slaving, which IMO is really the best way to do it, but if its a rehearsal, bedroom or small gig, i think the eeffects loop approach works great without all the added equipment like u said.... thanks for clarification.

Yeah we only play small stuff. Using my Wizard head and its FX loop is great for me....no need to drag all the extra stuff.
