I'm getting tired of the feel of EMGs (or lack of feel). I like the way they sound but prefer the feel of passives.
What active pickup would be best for an alder bodied, maple neck, ebony board Jackson DK1 ?
I'll be playing thru a Bogner Uberschall and Mesa 4x12 loaded with V30s pushed with a Tube Screamer.
Most important to me are thrash metal rythm tones (Exodus, Testament, Slayer, S.O.D., etc) and second would be lead tones.

I've narrowed my choices down to:
Suhr Doug Aldrige
DimeBucker SH-13
Duncan Distortion SH-6
Duncan Custom SH-5

I'm really gassing for a Suhr DA set....but I'm not sure if thats the right choice of my list above.

i'd go with a duncan distortion or JB....but i hear such nice things about the billl lawrence pickup recommended above..

If you decide to go Duncan I can cut you a killer deal   ......John

I prefer the Duncan Invader to the Lawrence 500XL. You can't go wrong with either for a metal rhythm tone, but both suck for clean tones. If you need something that will work for clean tones, I'd go with something with alnico magnets. Check the tone chart on the Duncan site. I'd look for High output and alnico magnets.

I'd go with the Custom or the Distortion. I think the Suhr Aldridge would be too smooth for your taste.

how much for a duncan distortion?
With that body don't rule out the JB...it's got better harmonics than the Distortion. The DD has always been a little to dark for my taste. In all my old shred ESP guitars the JB sounded amazing.

Dimarzio D Activator. It was pretty much made for people like you.

I can do the JB shipped anywhere in mainland US for $65  I also love this pup and prefer it to the DD.......John

I would strongly recommend you check out Bare Knuckles pickups. Specifically Painkillers or Nailbombs. They are about as good as you can get - though you have to pay for it.

I have a BKP Painkiller in the bridge of my mahogany Jackson Soloist and I'm very pleased with it. It's not a ultra high output pup, I'd say just a bit more than the JB ... but it's tight as hell. You can go to the BKP forum for more info ... http://www.bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/

If you play leads, I'd recommend something with an AlNiCo magnet. A5 is great for heavier music and still retains a fair amount of clarity for semi-clean and lead tones.

Ceramic magnet pickups are good for the crisp, high-output metal rhythm tones. But it isn't what I'd recommend with a maple neck.
