BTW, the ToneZone sounds awful in basswood. Too bass heavy with an annoying cocked-wah sound. The AN will always rule for neck pickups.

I didn't like the Tone Zone in Alder either. It's a cold sounding pickup IMO.

Yup, the stock V7s have to go cause they are pretty much vanilla sounding. Splitting the coils sound great clean and semi dirty but not getting a warm fuzzy over the higher gain stuff.

I am thinking Evos but always looking for suggestions.

Duncan Distortion :)

Two of the pickguard screws are already missing paint on mine but I bet a lot of dofuses are storing these things to collect

Should be a couple of weeks, I will use the same moose you used :cheer:
I gave my stock RG550 pickups to a friend when I popped them out of mine...they get passed around, but they won't ever be worth much...I'm pretty sure of that. ;)

Evo will get you the tight, searing Vai tone, but if you want to grow a pair, you'd be better with a Duncan. JB or custom IMO! :D

Sick!!!!!!

I already have a 565 with a JB and just looking for something a tad different.

The guitar in question is road flare red, I need a pair to drag that guitar out :D

When I get home I'll post some clips of my RG550 with Evo's...may give you an idea of how it may sound for you.

Since the distortion and the custom keep popping up, which one has more bottom end?

WooHoo!!!!

Scott, the RG550 GAS is sneaking back again. I had an amazing 5,5h practice session today and while I was playing I thought it would be nice to own a RG550XX (R or Y) although those have the high-profile original edge and the block neckjoint.

LOL, you're being too nice, Scott.

When I don't have any scheduled things to do and start playing, I can play for hours and hours without any breaks at all. The time flys by when doing sessions like that. My sense of time disappears... It's strange.

You had a nice session too, I see!

I butchered that one but good.

There's a graininess to the Evo's that you'll either dig or you won't....being that you're a Vai fine, you'll probably like them, though the RG550 is basswood and the JEM is Alder I believe.

I am digging the graininess to them for sure, I like some bite.

I replaced the stock pickups in my RG-570 with a Tone Zone/Blue Velvet/Airnorton. It was a tremendous improvement.
You may also want to consider Breeds, they are a bit more well rounded in my Jem 7DBK.

scott, wait and see if dimarzio comes out with pickups that match the paint of that thing!

I saw a guy on HC weekly spam thread selling a Bimarzio Steve's Special for $35. that is a good deal, and a good pickup.

I have a 550 body with a Jem7D neck and I use a Super 3 in the bridge and a PAF Pro in the Neck.
