so I'm looking for some must learn jazz/fusion solos - specific songs - to start learning. I've found plenty of Jimm Herring songs I really like, I'd like to find a Scott Henderson song to learn, maybe Tommy Bolin, anything along those lines - tia for any suggestions!!!

Get the Billy Cobham Spectrum album (Bolin) and take your choice.

yeah, I was checking that out in Itunes - but of course there was no guitar solos in the samples  . I'll check it out - thanks!

For Tommy Bolin, the best is Quadrant 4 from Spectrum. Such a kick-ass song! Next is Stratus. Kind of a fusion "standard." Jeff Beck does it on the Ronnie Scott CD. I have a Frank Gambale boot somewhere where he does it.

For good examples of pure moal soloing, check out almost any Mahavishnu Orchestra. Maybe start out with Birds of Fire or Meeting of the Spirits. Those are kind of fusion standards as well.

For more mainstream stuff there's the Jeff Beck fusion stuff.

Peaches En Regalia by Zappa. Hot Rats was among the very first of the fusion albums ever.

Whatever floats your boat by the Dixie Dregs.

Stuff by Al DiMeola - My fave is Tour De Force Live. The energy is fantastic and it just got all his great instrumental fusion solo stuff on it. Race with the Devil is the hilight, but that whole album is great.

Also Al Dimeola's performance on Return to Forever's Romantic Warrior - specifically the song "Majestic Dance" (the rest of the album barely has much guitar playing) will piss you off even more when you learn that Al was writing and playing that song at 19!!!!

The Explorers by Frank Gambale is a good album too, and there is even an accompanying TAB book (assuming its still in print).

Lastly, Jean-Luc Ponty's solo stuff is cool too (he played for a bit with Zappa and Mahavishnu Orchestra too). Listen to Imaginary Voyage.

Oz Noy-Epistrofunk
Scott Henderson-Snake Soda, Everglades, Giant Steps
Larry Carlton-Kid Charlemagne
Chris Poland-Peanut Buddha

Anything by Carl Verheyen, Herring, Holdsworth, Mclaughlin, Brett Garsed, Steve Morse would probably keep you busy.

The live version of "Fives" by Guthrie Govan that he did for bluesjamtracks.com. Learn that and you'll be my hero forever. You can even get a video, complete tab and audio tracks with and without Guthrie's guitar from bluesjamtracks.com and it is still unpossible...

Nice ones! That new Oz Noy disc is great!

Landau 'Live 2000' and Allen Hinds 'Falling Up' are definitely my two most listened to discs right now as far as guitar playing.

You might check out some Mike Stern stuff.

I find alot more interesting stuff in keyboard/ horn lines than guitar stuff. Not that there isn't cool gtr stuff, but other instruments have a different view for me.

thanks guys, I just got into really using iTunes - which is what sparked this thread - it's amazing having all that music at your fingertips!!!!

actually some good intro to semi-human holdsworth stuff can be found on john luc ponty's enigmatic ocean from the 80s

shawn lane "not again" is a great intro to lane style

I learned Dave Brubeck's Take 5 awhile ago, it reallt is cool to play that sax line.
