Looking to venture into a 7 string suggestions?

As the title says looking to dip my toe in the water with a seven string. Looking for suggestions on what would a good model to check out. Not looking for junk but also not looking to break the bank. Ltd's or Schecter? Let me know! Thanks!

My recommendation would be a EBMM Petrucci. If on budget, take the Sterling line - excellent quality for the money, great playability.

I used to have an Ibanez S 7-string. I probably shouldn't have sold that one...I can't recommend those guitars enough.

Unfortunately I haven't been a huge fan of Wizard necks.But I'm not sure how they would translate on a 7 string. Typically I lean towards passive pickups but have also heard great things about the Fishmans. Looking for something that plays well and to open up new ideas for riffs. My budget is mid tier $1000-$1500.

Budget would help with suggestions. I LOVE my Guerilla MSR-7. It's the best 7 I have owned and can be had for great prices used. The Schecter Reaper 7 Multi I had was really nice as well. The KM7 MK1 can be had for about $600 shipped and is the 2nd best 7 I have played. Blew my Prestige away, if I am honest.

If you just want to see if you jell with 7-strings, I would recommend buying something used that has settled and stayed relatively constant in the $400-$600 range that you could easily flip and get your money back once you decide. I guess you could do the same in the $1000-$1500 range, just less money risked. That was my route before I decided I liked it and went all in.

For specs, go for about the same you like in a 6 string guitar, not much difference really. Most notable difference will probably be the wider, thicker neck to support 7 strings.

The KM7 MK1 can be had for about $600 shipped and is the 2nd best 7 I have played. Blew my Prestige away, if I am honest.

This. I’d recommend a KM7 MK1 or MK2 or one of the later Jeff Loomis Signature JL7’s with the hip shot bridge. These all are pretty much good to go for metal, maybe the only thing you’ll have to do is swap a volume pot on the KM7.

I recommend Ibanez or Schecter.

I have an RGD multi scale 6 string, it's really nice. The Fishman Moderns are spectacular, I really want to get some in my other guitars. I imagine the 7 would be just as killer.

Want cheap and decent? The Schecter Demon 7 is $300 new right now.

I would look at the LTD Ec-257. Their QC is killer. Ive yet to get an LTD that didnt play awesome out of the box.

great 7 string on it's own but also a great one to "get used to playing 7's" with.
there's a good reason they are as popular as they are, and you should be able to find a used one in good condition in the $4-700 range.

It's not that simple to really know if you will gel with one. There's a reason so many players try 7's and wind up selling and thinking a 7 is not for them. The neck carves play a huge role in this as well as body shapes and neck joint.

I went through four or five different 7 stringers and felt the same. (not for me) Recently I decided to try again and it became one of my best guitars. It plays better than a 6 string and I love it. It has a boat load of mojo and outstanding tone as well. Point is you may need to try more than one. You cannot judge based on one guitar.

The differences I found between 7's is much more than the differences between 6's. Most just felt awkward and too far away from a 6 string. Maybe it's hard to design one that feels and plays like a 6.

Well I pulled the trigger on one of these. Schecter Banshee Mach 7. Specs seem quite nice. I will report back.

I have an Epiphone 24.5" Les Paul 7 Gothic and Kiesel Multiscale AM7. They are both cool in their own ways, but the scale makes them drastically different beast. DropA on the Epi is really pushing it and can;t really go any further, the AM7 can handle dropG or Gb and make it sing.

I did have a Schecter KM7, great guitar but the long scale length bugged me on the high strings (which led me to that multiscale Kiesel). Also hated that Nazgul pickup, it was clear and cutting but very quacky. I hear the 6 string Nazgul pickup is much better somehow.

So the key is solid pickups and proper string gauges.

I’m not into skinny Wizard necks either, but the RGD feels substantially thicker in my hands than a normal RG.

As for some other recommendations: PRS Marc Holcomb 7, Sterling Majesty, Charvel Pro Mod 7, if you don’t go crazy on options, you should be able to get a Kiesel in your price range as well, if you want something a little different, there are a few Jazzbox 7 string guitars that are cool as well.
