How do you feel about a weber mass/ hotplate on the 4100?

Hey blueburl,

My opinion ... total over kill and actually a step backwards for that particular amp. Your talking about an amp that has power scaling for each of the four channels. You can tailor that amps channels to run at whatever wattage you want already. That type of power scaling is better than attentuators anyway. A mass attentuator on the whole amp would seem redundant and overly generalizing on the power reduction concept to one singular level when you already have the ability to tailor each channel. I think what Bruce had in mind by adding that feature would be to eliminate the need for power attentuation all together and even took it a four steps further.

Yea, but 10 watts cranked can be loud for practice in my situation, especially since I normally practice after midnight.. The TM is still a loud amp. I am looking at a "practice" attenuator.. then cranking the same tone at gigs.

Oh I get it. Hmmm I don't know man. I read a lot of pros and cons on attentuators in general. It's worth a try.

Thanks guys,
So i guess forget the jj's then.

Does anyone know at what setting the power tubes start to break up with the stock valves? I cant tell as my bedroom is so small and i cant crank it past 9 oclock. I am thinking of put a THD Hoteplate on it. Has any one used this attenuator and how did it perform?
Thanks again for the advice .

I think youve got to get it to about 2oclock before the power tube saturation becomes noticable. Then between 2 and 3 oclock is where the amp really gets obscenely good sounding. So much higher than 9 oclock That is with tung sol 5881s at high power though. But Ive got to say, I think a hot plate is a waste of money with the MOD 50. Its just not needed. The tone is so good at low volumes as it is. Use that cash and get another module instead.

Yep, that is why i like to keep my channel volumes down around 10:00 or so - this way I can crank the power section ot 2-3:00!

yea- i figure with power scaling and some attuenation i can get great tone at softer volumes... for cheap.

$100 for a 50 watt weber mass attenuator isn't a huge investment.
