I need some advice on a 4x12 Marshall straight cabinet listed on the local Craigslist. The Tolex is rough, but there doesn't appear to be any major damage to the wood. The seller says it is a 1982 and has four Celestion Rola G12H 30-Watt speakers and that the cones are all intact with serial numbers of T1281 HL22. He wants $350 for it.

I need a quad of speakers for a Mesa 4x12 I recently bought, so I could use the spekers there, or keep the Marshall cabinet intact if, in fact, it's a good one (and a good price). I don't know Jack about Marshall cabinets (good ones / bad ones) and values. Any help is appreciated.

Here are a couple of pictures.

If they are blackback 30's, grab it...provided the speakers are in perfect shape. ;)
Is there any way to know without looking at them? I don't know the dude or how willing he will be to disassemble and take photos...

P.S. Thanks for the response. I was hoping you'd chme in ;)

You need to go there with a screwgun and take the back off and look. If they are Blackbacks, try it out to make sure they are not blown (with a clean tone) and snag it. IIWM, I would not take them out of that cab and put them in the Mesa. Leave them in the Marshall cab.

Thanks - I'll see if I can get him to take the back off and take a picture...

THE SPEAKER CODE DATES SAY THEY WERE MADE AUGUST 22 1978

He said that he thought they were made in 1978, so he knows a little about what he has. I clearly don't

I'd def rock that cab over a mesa but that's just me. I'd go for it :D

Right now I have a mid-70's Carvin straight 4x12 with Peavey Scorpion Plus speakers - the Mesa and Marshall are both a step in the right direction :D

Im not a big Marshall guy personally, however as stated if they are the black back '78's you will be very happy if they're in good shape. As for the Mesa, I love a nice Mesa cab. What sound are you aiming for cause that may help give a better opinion

I don't have a lot of cabinets, so I'm just looking for good, solid options. I have the Carvin I listed above (my main cabinet) that I use with an H&K Switchblade and a new pair of Avatar 2x12's with a mix of Celestion V30 and CL80's that I use with my rack rig in stereo. A lot of people swear by the Recto cabinet (and I found a decent deal on an empty one), so I snagged it a few weeks ago. An equal number of people swear by the Marshall cabs, so I figured that would be something good to have as an option.

Long story short, I'm not necessarily looking for anything in particular, just looking to have a few "go to" cabinets that work well for a variety of things.

The recto or the marshall is def the jack of all trades when it comes to the cabs of choice. If your lookin to fill the recto cab on the cheap check out WGS speakers amazing for the money. both are good choices tho and I think you'll be pretty happy with both. Those Avatars are sweet too tho.

Could not agree more with Jason here! I would rock the the Shit out of that marshall.

You need to check to see if the cones are original as well in that cab, IndyWS6. If they're the original speakers, they'll either be T1281 or T1534 frame codes with 444 Kurt Mueller cones. If you need help with determining this, shoot me an email or a call.

Yeah, it's 7 am here and I'm already up and on my 2nd cup of coffee. ;)

Thanks for the reply - and the offer to help. Much appreciated

I'm still waiting to hear back from the guy. I don't know if he just wasn't around over the weekend, or already sold it. His post says that the cones are intact and the frame code is T1281. I asked him to pull the back and shoot me a picture to show some detail. Hopefully he gets back to me today...

Thanks again

And the waiting begins. Hope you hear back today Indy....

I really appreciate the time you took to chime in on the thread. He just got back with me - here are the photos. The cabinet is clearly rough, but I could always re-Tolex it as some point if I wanted to. Tell me if you think I should buy this for $350...
