Stock tubes likely aren't doing you favors. 70/80's are the second worst speaker currently makes. A boost could help.

Or sell it and get a Splawn Supersport.

Fresh tubes and bias + an SD-1 in front and that amp will kill

What tubes would you recommend, and is biasing it yourself hard?

Also, would a different speaker be a good idea still?

I put JJ's in mine. No complaints. Biasing is easy with a bias rite. I have a Neo creamback in mine that I like. I'd recommend that or a creamback 65

Which JJ’s? model please

JJECC83 in the preamp and JJ EL34 in the power. Biasing is easy AF. Get a cheap probe. And yes go for the speaker. I would go with creamback.

Thanks. If I kill myself biasing I will haunt you

I have taken 550VDC before. Kinda sucked. Keep one hand in your pocket when you are in the chassis. But I was doing work to the amp. I don't think you would likely get zapped biasing.

Would you recommend switching the preamp tubes to 12AX7s if I’m going for more modded Marshall tone? Or stick with the ECC83s?

Also, why the G12-65 vs the 75W? The stock speaker is 80W.

First 12AX7 is the same thing as a ECC83. Different names for the same thing

The amp puts out 40 watts. As long as the speaker is greater and is the same impedance as what is in it you are fine.

I think that the 65 is better for your application. That's all.

Okay, thanks for the helpful knowledge. I’ll be playing small places. One particular local spot around here has a tiny stage, and is basically like an addition added on to a restaurant where they do live music every Saturday night. It’s like an outdoor patio where they can open up these garage doors, and it’s basically a semi-outdoor gig with people seated at tables under the patio, and more people seated and standing outside. It’s a small town, and this venue just opened up last summer, and they draw a big crowd there every weekend. That little place is packed. It probably seats 30 people or so, plus 20 more out behind the patio. Drummer plays an Alesis Stike Pro se, so there’s leeway as far as finding a comfortable volume. This amp shouldn’t have a problem. I would actually like to get a good tone without having to shatter the windows.
