What was the last "Great" metal album recorded with Marshalls ?
Where did the "British Steels" and Powerslaves" go :aww:

I am a huge early metal/thrash/NWOBHM fan. I cannot bring myself to listen to or buy anything that comes out these days. Are there any bands around that still have that raw, high mid, pissed Marshall tone. Unfortunately, it seems those days are over and those recordings are getting harder to find every day.

I have a Pandora Radio station set up called "Marshall". :D Saxon, Priest, Maiden, Riot, Armored Saint, Mercyful Fate, etc, etc, etc.................................

Is anyone else with me ???

Depends on what you consider "great"...

Mastodon uses boosted old-school Marshalls, although I think one of their guitarists switched to Laneys on their last CD...

That is definately cool stuff.

No doubt that old Marshall's still stake their place place in other forms of music. But my original post was about recent "metal" albums recorded with Marshalls. Guess it kind of proves my point when I get responses like Mastodon, Dan Swano, and Plankton.

All cool stuff in their own right, but not what I had in mind

I don't know about strictly falling into that style of music or obtaining that tone you're referring to, but...

The Lord Weird Slough Feg uses old Marshalls live and I'm assuming they do the same on the recordings. Total Thin Lizzy vibe from them. Great band.

Grave Digger might be a bit too modern sounding now a days but I had a bootleg from about 2000-2003 and the guitarist was using two Marshalls.

Gamma Ray uses Marshall too.

Slough Feg is going to be on the road in November, too, so keep an eye out for that date on the 28th, might be Dallas.

awesome
Love slough feg

and I don't think troublehead is into them, but I believe Trey Azagthoth has pretty much always used marshalls with a rat in front

oh, and until recently Cory Smoot (Flattus Maximus from 2002-present) used a JMP preamp and some valvestate power amp for his live rig. You can hear it on "Live From Mt Fuji"

and probably in some places on War Party and Beyond Hell

I guess I can add to my own thread..............I forgot Death Angel used a TSL100 on their last disc.

I just gave a listen to the new Prong album ...

sounds like Tommy is still using the old Valvestate heads ...

i think that back in the day, marshalls were the go to amp for heavy tone. people kept boosting them, modding them, and generally pushing them farther away from that raw tone. other manufacturers also made models with more gain, different timbres and such. the tone and the music kind of side by side got more aggressive, and extreme. i played a couple older marshalls years ago, but kept pushing them to get more aggressive tones from them. boosts, eq's, etc....
i just think that as metal evolved so did that tone. although i still think the jcm800, or the jmp markII is a great amp, they have limits that more modern amps don't.
there are some bands that keep the faith so to speak, and still use those tones.

Well, you don't need a Marshall to get those tones. I could throw my Boogie MarkIV on a Greenback loaded 4x12 and get any old school metal sound i needed.

But to answer your other question. I picked up a Kamelot cd recently which i like. The singer sounds a lot like Geoff Tate from Queensryche. And check out Recreation Day from Evergrey. Great CD.

I don't know if you're into this kind of stuff, but I saw Through The Eyes of The Dead a couple weeks ago and; they were playing through Marshall's. I'm not sure what kind they were, but if you like that kinda stuff check it out; https://www.myspace.com/tteotd

Trivium uses Marshalls. "The Crusade" has tons of that old school Marshall sound.

Don't know if you're into this kind of music, but Sum 41 uses Marshalls. I thought "Does This Look Infected" was a great disk, some very well written songs IMO.
