Is that as much gain/saturation your going to get out of this?

Buy a used JMP, get Dave Friedman to drop the KS in there, and add white tolex.

You will have a nicer amp for less money.

Fixed. :)

Vince I got the amp for you . You want gain. I got one with capitol gain. Okay check list, gain, yes. white tolex, yes. Sounds killer no matter what , yes. It's leaving here monday most likely. :checkthisout: You think about it.

My Dad had one,....a full stack. When I first heard it , I wasn't impressed with it. Average sounding like a JMP 76 non master volume w/ no boost. Like everyone else said you'd have to crank it to unbelievible volumes, to get it to break up with power tube overdrive tone. And without a drummer or a band it sucks even with ear plugs.

Then he had it modded with an master volume and it ROCKED BIG TIME. It actually sounded like Randy Rhoads. No boosts , overdrive, or distortion pedals. The original 70s MXR script distortion was perfect for lead boosts and over the top stuff. At this time I was like damn this is the best Randy Rhoads tone I have ever heard. Of course besides from the man himself R.I.P.

At first I though he was crazy because its a $2599 to $3200 head. But after hearing it was totally worth it. Yes you can get the same sound with an attenuator but you also can lose a transformer at the same time. Plus to me its harder to dial in that RR tone. It clouds it just a bit at low volumes for me.

Bottom line you need an attenuator/power brake or a master volume mod to truely get the Randy Rhoads Experience from this amp.

Once you do that its an amazing amp that really dials in that Blizzard of OZ sOUND.  :

it's either off or on really   To be fair it's always slaved into a power amp.

This isnt that loud in the room.

bad ass organic marhsall tone! the octaver dude..great clip!

for the cost of these amps or any, my opionin is you shouldnt have to put a pedal in front of it, why the hell do you think all this modding started back in the day, cuz the dam amp didnt have enuff gain...

Splawner just get the dam cameron marshall... or you might regret it and ill have to hear, OH i wonder what it sounded like, I wish i bought that head!

n now youll have to chage your name too

Sounds like great raw Marshall tone!
If you've never stood in front of a cranked Marshall with a 4x12 cab, you'll never know.

I heard one in the Marshall demo booth when they were first introduced at NAMM. Best amp I heard at the show. That's me on the right.

The OP PM'd me on this...I just saw this thread. Here is what I replied:

It's pretty much a straight up plexi. The modded channel really doesn't sound that much different IMO...slightly more gain, but not a lot.

There is no such thing as bedroom volume with amp. In fact, unless you are playing an arena, there's really no such thing as stage volume with this amp
I've owned many 100w Marshalls...this one is the loudest by far. It will wake the neighbors on "1"...the volume comes on instantly...it's almost like an on/off knob that adds saturation as you turn it up. To use this amp in any practical applications, attenuation is a must.

I think you would love the way it sounds based on your gear, but I question if you would like its feel. Much less gain and no compression, and a much harder feel than your amps. It will instantly expose any technique issues...no hiding behind this one.

The "cranked" tone will get you all of your classic 80's Marshall tones (Demartini, Lynch, etc) but you will want a boost for soloing most likely, and also for any heavier material.

If I only had one amp, it wouldn't be this one as a plexi just doesn't have the versatility that I need for gigging. As part of a collection though it is an awesome addition. It is argualbly the best sounding JMP that I've ever heard, including my old ones.

I agree with most of your post. Regarding the compression, I find it has more compression and sag than my other 100 watt Marshalls. But they have more filtering in the power supplies, haven't brought myself to change the RR yet....

Could this simply be a difference in tubes? Mine is tighter than any of my old ones.

I'm trying to think what I have in mine....the RR has chinese EL34's (the same as the Ruby EL34) and stock filtering. The 68 Super Trem has old Marshall labelled Siemens, 69 plexi has 90's era SED's and more filtering. The 68-69 both have the old style presence circuit while the RR has the newer wider bandwidth style.

Too bad we can't get these side by side to compare them.
