Master Effects PMEQ...Master of Puppets studio EQ pedal

Seems to me like low & high are boosts, and mid is a cut.

I've spent quite a bit of time trying different approaches with mine & the C+. First was PEQ only. This is great in the bedroom, but thin in the mix and on the mic. Then I tried PEQ as the main, and fill in with the GEQ. This was better. Finally I tried GEQ as the main, and fill in with the PEQ. In the band mix THIS is where it's at. So I tried to record it.

Note that I'm not trying to "copy" a MOP tone since I'm not a huge fan of it. I'm trying to find a tone that kicks ass live & recorded in my band mix. This is the best I've come up with so far, and it involves all 3 pedals in the pic.

Yeah, thats the one. Noted on the freqs, thanks. This pedal doesn't have any reference markings on the freq knobs, just "High", "Mid" and "Low" so I'm trying to figure it out. The level knobs are straightforward enough.

This is where those frequencies are on the Aphex EQF-2. Boosting 4,6K, cutting 1,2K and boosting 120. If the pedal works the same way it should be something like this. The outer knob is the frequencies. The inner knob is the gain, where 12 o clock is +6db.
For reference, this is set as Battery from Flemmings notes.

Thanks guys.
I reached out to Tim and he replied along the lines of "Unfortunately there's no 1:1 settings. the original used pots with a taper that I have had trouble sourcing so while the ones that I used have the same min/max range, the sweep is a bit different."

So, the sounds are in there, but the dials won't 1:1 match the notes. All good, I'll just swing the knobs freely and use my ears. It's a fantastic pedal and it pretty easily gets that particular chug freq.

Yea that’s the best case option, I didn’t realize the frequencies weren’t listed on the pedal. Hard to know what kind of Q value the boosts Are too, albeit the aphex way curves im sure are somewhere on the internet.

On that note, you can still figure out the right frequencies you are trying to target. Set the boost real high, 10-12 db on whatever frequency you want, and analyze what’s chAnging on your computer with a standard eq like pro q 3. It’ll be very apparent what frequency you are actually boosting/cutting, that’ll get you in the balllpark for sure.

Great thread, has anyone tried the Sine effects PMEQ ?

Torn between this and the MOP pedal that sounds SO good above - thanks for the effort in making the video!

Any thoughts good or bad about the PMEQ now that some of you have owned it a while?

in my mark IVa loop, its on 100% of the time. that way when i switch the graphic off, its not SO middy.
in my 5150 loop, keep it on for rhythm playing, and turn it off for leads, so its like a mid boost when its off. akin to the mark IV lead and lead eq.
its a forever pedal for me, i'll never not own one.

I thought it was pretty good at doing the one thing, probably a little better at that one thing than the Empress ParaEQ although the Empress has a lot more latitude.

At the end of the day though I've sold them both as IMO they're a little more processed sounding than I'd like.

Yeah the Empress I had was very clinical sounding with ugly artifacts to the notes (other Empress pedals are like that too IME). Haven’t tried the Master Effects

My vintage Ibanez and Yamaha PQ pedals sound organic as you’d expect from something vintage, but very limited in range or extra output/boost. Still cool pedals I’ve kept

If I ever get the itch again I'd like to try the ME EQFH. I've heard a couple demos I really like, posssibly more than the PMEQ. I did talk to one of the demoers and he confirmed that it is also a bit processed though, and to be fair that's more an "in the room" issue than an "on the mic" issue for me.

Yeah I found if one pedal sounds processed it’s generally all the pedals of a given brand or vice versa when a pedal sounds organic by a given brand. IME a good vintage amp like your marks can expose that more. It’s shame things like how organic or processed a given gear piece sounds or how 2D or 3D sounds are some of those qualities that are harder to tell in recordings vs hearing it with our own ears in person

Agreed and that’s why I sold both. I much preferred the ME to the Empress though.
The ME does a cool thing, but did add a processed element that I didn’t dig. IMO the trade off wasn’t worth it.

Parametric EQ is essential in my guitar amp FX loops. But you can get a lot more EQ for the money by getting a used rack unit. I got this 10-band Ashly unit for the same price as that 3-band Empress pedal:

It's actually 2-channels with 5 fully parametric bands and 2 semi-parametric bands each. I patched Out 1 -> In 2 to make it a 1-channel 10-band fully + 4-band semi-parametric.
