Mastodon's new guitar sound on 'The Hunter'

It's probably not transposed. Mastodon have been known to drop their strings down to A, so the tuning is AADGBE. I'm a fan, they have some god awful tones for such impressive gear they use.

I am still skeptical though. I played the song on my guitar in B standard tuning as well as "dropped B", and it sounds more 'right', somehow, more like in the main track. I think I tried a tuning of BADGBE as well and that sounded more like it than the iso track.
I know it's foolish to think but I can hear some artifacts in the 'iso track' clip that could have been caused from slowing it down in audio software.

The only thing i know was from reading electronic musician, it said "80's JCM 800's and Hi Watts" but that was mentioned about the entire album not that particular track.

Bugga, I wish they did a track-by-track equipment list. Just for curiosity sake.

Their tone is total ass on the new album. It was pretty good on the last one. I don't know what happened to it.

haha! I actually reckon Crack the Skye got way too fuzzy-sounding at times, thus diminishing the sonic impact- it just "buzzes" rather than knees you in the nuts with claws.
The Hunter is an improvement to me, it's like a combo of Crack the Skye with the crunchier tones of Leviathan.

Dont know about the recording amps, but on this clip from last week I see a Marshall and Diezel VH4 and Herbert :)

hmmm, sounds a bit 'bloated" there?

still it's 10 bazillion trillion quadrillion times better than that bloody nu-metal Recto Rumble sound from the 1990s-2000s! I hate that damn sound!

Saw them on Letterman last week and the played Curl of the Burl.
They were using 800's and Oranges.

thanks man. I guess that is the core of the sound then. Interesting though as posted above they threw in the Herbert at the Jools Holland gig.

I hope they come down to Australia soon! hopefully they'll sound better live at a concert than on a TV stage.

Gonna see Mastodon this coming Sunday. Their guitar tones rock. They are not afraid to use different tones either. This is just another example of guitar tones that don't sound maybe all that great alone, but in the band mix and song sound fucking killer. As to what amps they use? Who knows? Marshall, Orange, Diezel ect. Most likely they couldn't even tell you exactly what amp was used since they had several. Plus, even with the iso tracks, aren't we still hearing final production tones or are they the straight raw tracks? Also, is the guitar just downtuned or am I hearing like a sub octave thing?

awesome- enjoy the gig mate! get some pics and videos if ya can, thanks.

I also hear a sub-octave thing in the iso track, but yet I am sceptical of it too now.

And for reference- the video with the lumberjack caravan bloke getting high off woodchips and those titties ;)
That video was CRAZY :scared:

I know hey! Basically it's about a meth head....scary stuff...

but I love it how they threw in those chicks- sure enough they are cookie cutter blondes but it's cool! I love the tackiness without being TOO tacky, it's more of a laugh. Plus it's nice to see some boobage without it being some gangsta rap clip. ;)

haha I just thought of this-> Curl of the Burl could be like AC/DC's The Jack, when they play it live all the hot chicks in the crowd can get their boobies out and they show it up on the big screen :D

I did a cover of that tune! Love it!

nice work!!! sounds a bit too compressed & smooth compared to the rawness of the original, but yet that could be YouTube's compression. I enjoyed it

I really should record a clip of this too. I might try playing it up an octave but use my POG to lower it down, and see how that sounds.

I am seeing them Sunday too!

And I have all of the stems of that song and there is quite a bit of octave fuzz pedal going on that really saturated everything.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's going to be a damn good show. I'm confident their guitars are going to sound killer regardless of the brand of amp. I really like their tones. Heavy as hell and different.

The Show Rawked ! It was good to meet BubbaStain and FLuff191 !

Love the new album, love the tones. Dunno what you guys are hearing.

Mastodon was excellent. I liked Red Fang too. I didn't like Dillenger Escape Plan at all. I left to go buy a couple of Krispy Cremes for a good chunk of their set. I also got a great deep tissue massage thanks to being 4 people back from the front barrier and having the mosh pit right behind me.  They played a great set. I thought their guitars sounded excellent for what they play. Wasn't sure if I got kicked in the head one time too many, but I don't think they played Oblivion. Anyways, great show. Nice to meet zee1usa too. Pretty good football game on in the bar too.

On The Hunter, Dry Bone Valley (#8) could have sounded better with the tone on Crack the Skye's song #4 at about 4:30 in. When they kick into that main heavy riff it just sounds so clear and brutal. It's a similar riff but on the new one it seems to be muffled a bit. Still one of my favorite tunes on the record though.
