May have purchased fake D'Addario strings

Just got some new D'addario strings in. I always like to have plenty of strings in stock. Anyway, it looks like the last 10 pack of EXL110 may have been counterfeit, still not sure. Used 8 of the 10 packs. Even worse, it looks like the 2 pack of Bass EXL170TP may also be fake. I purchased these in 08 and 09, the new strings I got are real. I actually bought some Curt Mangan strings as well, so we will see how those are. Have not been as impressed with the last 10 pack of guitar strings as I usually am.

I e-mailed D'Addario, so we will see what they say.

That's an unusual situation. Never heard of someone receiving "fake" strings. What company did you purchase them from?

I actually bought some Curt Mangan strings as well, so we will see how those are.

Curious about this. I recently changed to Curt Mangan strings. After 2 long periods with DR and then Pyramids, tried to like Elixirs but no dice. Then checked out Curt Mangan strings and BAM. The standard strings are great, the coated are amazing. They ain't cheap but play, feel and sound great.

Here is part of the e-mail I sent to D'Addario: "I purchased 2 twin packs of D'Addario EXL170TP from www.music123.com on 3/24/08. These boxes do not have the ring around the logo on the front. The X, slightly overlaps the L. The XL is also pink in color, unlike the new real ones where the XL is blue in color. I have not used any of these strings. Can you help me confirm if these bass strings are real or fake and what to do if they are fake?

On 6/6/09, I purchased a 10 pack of the EXL110 from www.samash.com. Again, I noticed no ring around the D'Addario logo on the front or back. I have used 8 of the 10 sets of these strings and not had any issues. Again, do I have real or fake strings?"

On the Curt Mangans, I already got a set for my Rickenbacker 360 as it uses custom gauge strings. The Ric strings I bought from Samash were sticky, like someone left machine oil on the strings. Bought 5 packs and every one of the Ric strings were like that. Very pleased with the Curt Mangans on my Ric, nice strings. Curious how they will be on my regular strat and Les Paul guitars. The Curt Mangan 10-46 have not come in yet.

Should mention, the new strings I ordered (2 pack of bass strings and a 10 pack of guitar EXL110's) I got from Woodwind and Brasswind online. I think they are part of MF/GC now. Anyway, they have these new codes on the packs and are real. You can now check the codes on the strings and confirm if they are legit.

The Mangans sound great and feel great but I was breaking the plain stings like crazy. I was using them for about 6 months. I cant have breakage at gigs so I went back to Dean Markley

I will pretty much use any set of 10's I can get my hands on at any time, but if I am paying for the strings, I have always liked DR.

got a response from D'Addario, looks like I just got older stock strings.

"I believe you are referring to the ellipse around our logo. We had changed our logo in late 2007 to the current logos. The sets you have may have just been last stock of the old boxes before the logo changes took place. The two dealers you mention purchase directly from us so I can insure that you do have authentic D’Addario product, just old stock. Most of the issues we are having with counterfeiting are coming from China specifically so you should not see these issues locally."

wow. Some im sure the other brands are like DR and Dean MArkley are having the same problems then.
