I've been messing around with this new MCP pickup I got a while back. It's some ceramic/alnico 5 hybrid. It's an aggressive pickup with some fatness, heat & compression for some good low end chunk with bite. Anyway, here's a clip I did with it through my Fortin Natas. I probably dialed it in a little too smooth and bass heavy for recording purposes (ancient strings don't help either), but it was loud & thumping in the room and I liked the overall character so I said "screw it" and posted it

Here's just the guitars:

Here's it with some EZD2 drums:

Will check this out when I can get to a PC with decent speakers.
Is this a custom wind, or something Wade is going to release for general sale?

As far as I know he’s going to release it.

Awesome! Is it something you helped spec out for your requirements? Or did Wade come up with the design and recommend it to you?
Sounds great btw. Chunky, tight and mean.

It sounds great but as with any clip....How Much is the Pickup? & How much is the Amp/Player?

It was all Wade’s design. I was looking for something ceramic with a little more push and aggressiveness and ended up getting this one. I go in cycles with pickups. I’ll play something lower output for a while and then I’ll want something with heat. Rinse and repeat lol.

it sounds great! Do you know the DCR on it? I know the Solution is 17K & the Nuke is 23K i believe.

I hear you man. For a while I was on a low to medium output cycle (Motor City 2nd Degree BB, Detroiter, Blisster, Torque. And Jim Wagner Darkburst, Godwood) and now I'm just starting to explore more extreme output models after my experience with Jim Wagner's Iron Man pickups. I have ordered a Motor City Solution & HotHead direct from Wade, and I have managed to convince a friend of mine to sell me his old HellBaby pickups that he's never actually used before. Should have them all very soon to compare with one another.

I'd be very interested in what you think of the pickups you ordered.

No worries. I'll post reviews and clips as soon as they are installed in my guitars.

I just pulled the backplate off and it read 16.06K. I haven’t played either the Solution or Nuke, but I need to at some point lol. A buddy of mine has the Nuke and really likes it.

I have a hothead and hellbaby. Both are great pickups. If you’ve been into more extreme output pickups, you should ask Wade about the Shema. It’s around 22K or 23K. It’s killer.

Oh man! I might have ordered one of those if I'd known about it. I love Wade and adore his work, but I really wish he'd update his website to keep up with the coming and going of new models.

I had a HotHead set a while ago but it was zebra bobbins and 2 Conductor, so I ended up flipping it. But the bridge HotHead remains one of my fave pickups I've owned. Can't wait to have another one back in my stable. How would you compare the HotHead bridge to the HellBaby bridge?

Damn nice chunk and tightness at the same time. Good playing as always!

Cheers.

The Hothead is one of my favorites as well. There's not much it can't do well.

Comparing the Hothead and Hellbaby, eq-wise they aren't miles apart. The Hellbaby has a slightly more lo-mid & mid-mid focus, while in contrast I find the Hothead a little more mid-mid & upper mid focused. But overall, both are pretty balanced with no big spikes or dips to my ear. The Hellbaby is a little cleaner with a rounder attack, so despite being clean it's not really a clanky sound. The Hothead isn't quite as clean or round in the attack, though not what I'd consider sharp in attack either, and can sound a bit more aggressive in the mids a little quicker. The Hellbaby is also a little more compressed, so individual notes on the Hellbaby sit back a bit, but it gives you a little more sustain in return. The Hothead is a little bit more open with individual notes that sound bigger and jump out with a little more authority. Both track your playing well and are tight enough, but the Hothead is a little faster tracking.

Many thanks for the detailed comparison. I know the HotHead well, so that was very enlightening.
How about the Shema. Can you compare that one also?

Since you guys are MCP experts, I have an Afwayu sitting around. What have you found that best to bond with ? Bright or darker guitars?

Sounds super tight and pissed. I like it.

Agreed. New models keep coming out apparenty, and no idea what they are. What's the Hothead? How does it compare to the 2ndbb? I heard there's a 3rdBB, but no idea what's the thing.

Sure thing. The Shema is bit more different eq wise. Maybe less extreme lows, but it doesn’t sound mid-humpy because it has good string separation. It has a more pissed off sound with a snarly, raw character in the mids. I love the character, but it’s probably not as versatile as the other two as a result. It has more bite in the attack and more compression than the hothead, but the rawness of the mids helps the notes jump out and keep it from feeling too squashed. The Shema has a tighter low end when playing chunky riffs. Oh I was mistaken on the dc, it’s actually 19k w/an A4 Magnet. If you’ve played a Garuda, maybe imagine a hotter, thumpier and more raw & snarly version and that would give you a good idea of what that Shema does.
