Mercyful Fate Is Friggin Awesome!

I prefer DBTO. But it was my first MF album (back in the 80’s). Didn’t get Melissa ‘til much later. Great stuff but DBTO to me is a stronger album from beginning to end. Real shame they couldn’t keep it together through the 80’s because as much as Laroque is worshipped, I much prefer Fate to KD solo.

DBTO was one of those classic cases of not knowing the band but buying it because the album cover was so cool..and there was no way that cover was a band that didn’t rock (15 year old fingers crossed) 🤞🤘
"Bat Out Of Hell" certainly catfished me on that one back in the day. Was expecting much heavier music. Love the album now, but certainly wasn't what the cover art alluded too.

Imagine how I felt about Molly Hatchet with their awesome Frazetta covers. This mellow, small sounding little southern rock with a singer, sounding like his head was all nose. What’s funny is, I even have a Molly Hatchet T-shirt but it really is just for the Death Dealer image on it. If I could remove the name Molly hatchet from the top, I would.

Gotta agree with the notion that MF is a lot better than KD solo. KD solo has some good riffs/songs/albums but ultimately the most memorable material is the classic Mercyful Fate stuff.

Can't prefer either one really. KD solo is/was really unique with stellar songwriting/production/guitar playing.
Both mandatory

I agree, with the exceptions of Abigail, Them, & Conspiracy. Those albums are the pinnacle of KD awesomeness, especially Larocque and Blakk on Them and Conspiracy. I'll even throw The Eye into that mix. Though not as strong, the leadwork on that one is impeccable. Especially Andy's.

The Eye and Conspiracy are probably my favorite KD albums, along with Fatal Portrait. The atmosphere on "The Eye" even if a lot of it is the synths at work, is awesome.

Absolutely love this cover...And one of the best overall mixing / production jobs of anay record ever in my opinion. When I listen to it cranked in my car cranked up, I literally laugh out loud on how amazing it sounds. Beats the Black album production to my ears.

100% agreed, its rare when an artist or artists in this case can take already incredible tunee and just take em to a whole new level

their version of the dio tunes is another incredible example. honestly wish they'd put out like a 5 disc tribute album for all the bands that inspired them

dio cover for thsoe that have not heard:

In The Shadows - Killer album, and one of my favorites. This one's a banger..

I love MF & KD equally for their own individuality.

I listened to both from the beginning, but MF only got stronger from In The Shadows to 9. Can't say the same for KD. They were kind of up and down after The Eye. Some good, some lame.

My favorite song on that album.

Big fan here as well. More so of Melissa (my first) than DBTO, although the latter had some absolute classics as well.
Then there was the Nuns Have no fun EP... 🤘 "Corpse without a soul" is my fave track. And 'Tallica pussied out by not playing that intro solo on Garage Inc.
