Totally agree, I've not figured that out either. Initially he used the VH4 for those performances then these Mesa's appeared since.

id love to get the scoop from mesa guys on this!

if this rumored 84 explorer comes out, surely gibson will figure out the trick with the hetfield mesa sig....i mean cash grab is in gib$on$ dna!

Fortin
Isn't it a rebranded Fortin?

Could be that a financial agreement couldn't be reached, or that Hetfield's famous tone isn't going to come out of a Mesa product alone. Outboard parametric EQ, and a whole lot of talent goes into producing those tones. You can imagine every second punter is going to say "it doesn't sound like the black album".

Plus it took them 40 years to reproduce a stock product, not sure how they would manage a delicate project like this. Or ten other reasons, who knows.

I just realized the IIC+ reissue IS, in essence, an unofficial Hetfield signature amp. Ok, it may not be a clone of his Crunchberries ++ specs, but for all intents and purposes…

To my ear, it’s likely his main C+ got the ++ treatment in between Puppets/Garage Days ‘87 and Justice. The former is rawer/grittier, more open and the latter quite a bit more compressed sounding.

Zero need for artist relations or royalties either.

Doesn't Hetfield run a bunch of different amps together, anyway? And the classic albums are all mixtures of stuff, like marshall power amps. Closest to their tone I ever got was Boogie quad into Marshall Poweramp. I swear it was dead on.

Which 84 rumor? Gibson released a white 80s Explorer earlier this year in 2 batches which sold out pretty quickly and are now on reverb for twice the original price.

in one of the other threads, maybe the NAMM one, someone said the gibson ceo has been posting shots on instagram with what looks like a potential hetfield sig

i unfortunately don't know any more than that

Gibson actually worked with Hetfield several years ago in trying to R&D some signature guitars that would potentially exist under a limited licensing agreement outside of his deal with ESP. In the clip below he can be seen playing an "Iron Cross" Les Paul Custom prototype from the Gibson custom shop. What I was told is that Gibson was not doing an adequate job of executing on Jame's detailed instructions in terms of features, relicing, pick-ups, etc and he ultimately walked away from exploring the arrangement any further. I have no issue with blaming Gibson AR and custom shop for this SNAFU, but James has also earned a reputation of being an absolute type-A hyperperfectionist (look at the attention to detail on his cars and motorcycles) in many areas of his life, including gear. My understanding is that his arrangements with ESP and EMG have continued to flourish based on those companies willingness to be put through the paces and do the heavy lifting to give him exactly what he wants. I was recently (posted then deleted here) given some information regarding a possible Diezel Hetfield prototype amplifier that was tenitively being called the "VHET4", that was essentially a modified VH4 with some exciting features and updates, but that turned out to be from a highly unreliable source. At the end of the day the three brands that Hetfield has been associated with in terms of amplification has been Marshall, Mesa Boogie and Diezel. Of the three, I suspect it would be Mesa / Gibson that has the best chance of actually getting something to market with his name on it.
