MESA STANDARD (OVERSIZED) VS TRADITIONAL 4X12 CABS

I played a oversized Mesa for years as my go-to cab. I replaced the V30's with greenbacks and it sounded fantastic for what I was playing (80's/90's hard rock). Ive heard all the talk about the flubby bass and it's nothing I ever experienced. Played this cab for years with a rackmount DR and it killed. The cab just sounds huge and baddass. What more can you ask?

Ive always found that the traditional were more focused / less muddy than the oversized ones.

are the traditional punchier than the OS? i had an original OS straight front with the slant Baffle but it was a tad boomy i'm assuming from the low end just bouncing around in the box rather than being pushed out of the speakers

Yes, they are tighter and punchier.

Old thread re-boot:

I've got a easy way to get into a mesa trad 4x12...seems like the problem with the Mesas vs the Bogners et. al. is they are wired two parallel pairs in series. Bogner does it series pairs in parallel.

The trad and the bog are both about the same size. Bet I rewire that Mesa with sound runner 10 ga in series parallel and I get uber secks toanz.

Hated the oversized for tight metal guitars. Traditionals are great. I guess for heavy chording the oversize might sound goodish.

-I don't think ya can lose either way!! they both kick a$$!!-

-if you have a bright amp or single coil guitar I would go OS-(that's why the RECTO OS cab came to be,..to help with treble monsters known as the rectp series)-

I will say this, the pre 2003 oversized mesa cabs loaded with Made in England vintage 30s is the best freaking cab ever made!!!!

This ^^^ I own a pair of them and have no complaints. Built like tanks and my Rev2 thunders through them like a boss!

Oversized is cool, but for me the straight traditional sounds a lot better. I use Mark series amps and it is controlled and tight, yet has a big bottom end.

It's like being in a bar and having to choose between two obvious 10s... No matter which one you take home, you win.

I will say that I prefer the slant Standard... But I wouldn't be upset with a Trad.

What do you find the difference in tone to be between the two wiring options you mentioned. ?

I just sold my last Mesa OS 412 for good and replaced it with a traditional strait Mesa 412. Warmer, tighter, and over all doesn't take up so much room.

IMHO, the OS cabs sound great with Mesa rectos, but with a more modern head with more aggressive bass, it's easy to flub out through the OS.

As per this, for reference:

To me, parallel-series sounds a bit more up-front with the mids, a bit less prominent on the lowest frequencies and a bit less "clangy" sounding (in the highs). It's not a big difference and I'm sure it'll make more/less difference with different speakers and/or in different cabs.
