Metallica Hate Train Released

I never really caught them before Black Album...

But when I heard that, I was blown away, and I looked up to them immensely.

After that I sorta lost interest, and when Some Kind of Monster came out...

Then they almost had it back with Death Magnetic... So close...

And now... Meh.

When I saw the thread title I seriously though that this going to be about a bunch of people who hated Metallica that were on some sort of trip. I thought that was more likely than a song being named Hate Train.

I really like the music man..... sounds very cool.

The vocal melody isn't very good honestly.
If they had a good vocal melody, he would not be able to sing it. They are a classic example of a band that could never find a singer.

Huh? James had a killer voice in the 80s and beginning of the 90s, surely better than any other thrash frontman. To each his own I guess :dunno:

You know one thing I hate with music these days is that the vocals are waaayyyy up front in the mix. The music seemed to blend better back in the day. Take that "Hate Train" song for instance. The music is chugging along and then out of nowhere this dry voice with no effects comes in.

I will give them credit where credit is due. For 50 year old's, they still can kick ass in concert and play with the same raw passion they always had. Just saw them 2 months ago in Abu Dhabi. But, yeah, maybe it is time to give up the writing and new releases. At this point, they can sell out anything and I doubt they give a damn what critics think but are having fun with it. It is easy for me to overlook though. I grew up with the band every step of the way and they are iconic musicians to me. So, I can overlook a few missteps.

You say misstep I say chronic stumble and faceplant. :D

OK, double face plant

This and LULU. Fuck, I can't take it :gethim:

Musically, it's a bit generic for them, and sounds like a mashup of some other stuff they've done. Vocal delivery is alright, lyrics are .. eh. Not a standout track, but not awful either.

The band deserves a lot of the flack they get, but I don't see how anyone can expect this band (or any other) at their age to be delivering music with the anger and intensity they had during MoP, for example.

it sounds like burned out middle age men try to grab at their youth. i don't care anymore.

Yeesh. At some point you gotta know when to throw in the towel. Seems that these guys refuse to go out gracefully.

Sadly +1
I am yet to make it thru all the black album ..... never owned it after I borrowed it for two days. But did take my wife to the show .....and have seen them since and they do put on a good show most nights.

Just imagine the killer harmony's if they would have kept Dave Mustaine in the band ? Ronnie James Dio might have been good....or Rob Halford. Imagine these two doing Master or whatever...
I do like the early stuff but it is more grunt and growl than singing ....

:scared: I'm going back top and watching the video now...

edit ..... The music was alright. The vocals sound constipated...

Somebody should tell Slayer and Testament that. Both those bands still bring it just as good as they ever did, even if Tom Araya can't scream as high as he used to   I don't include Megadeth because Dave keeps hiring new rhythm sections.

Age is no excuse for Metallica, they got rich and lazy and they've sucked for much longer than they ruled. They weren't too old in '91 but from Black and onwards it's gone from boring to downright awful. I have no idea what happened to James's voice but I just wish he would stop and they only do instrumentals. But then they might throw in 3 more useless breaks and tempo changes above and beyond the 5 they didn't need in the first place.  That song actually starts out OK but like a lot of DM, just goes to shit or falls apart.

the gallop rhythm of the verse has a good groove and is pretty cool but the rest is all recycled and boring. vocals during the mellow part is horrible and for the love of god... that damn snare

I know it's cool to hate on the Black album and all, since it's sold a bazillion records......but, I don't think it's entirely justified. Sure, it's the record where they drastically changed their style to gain a bigger audience and abandoned their fast-tempo, thrash roots. And, it doesn't help that many of the songs on that record have been played on the radio over and over non-stop since the day it came out to the point where some people can't stand hearing them for the millionth time. But, from a mainstream point of view, that record will stand the test of time. They were able to craft songs that really appealed to the masses.....and that is not an easy thing to do. It was an expertly produced record at that time period, very slick. James and company really put a lot of effort into making sure that every detail came out right to really connect to the listener. And, even when there was doubt....such as Kirk's over-use of wah on the record or the mixing process where the drums were obviously placed too high in the mix from an average producer's perspective, it still worked out, because it was happily accepted by the masses....probably more so, if they hadn't been. I for one, liked it when it came out and still like it to this day, even though it isn't my favorite by them. I really respect it from an artistic outlook. Although, I'm with the many who will always look upon their '81 - '88 output as the "essence" of what best represented Metallica as a band. That's still my favorite era of their career.

The vocals are way up front like someone else said and need some effect like someone else said also. WAY too dry! It probably wouldnt sound nearly as bad if they did something with the vocals like that. Do I think his voice is pretty wasted?............yeah, that too.

I know it's cool to hate on the Black album and all,

:) My friend bought it the day it came out .... He gave it to me 4 hours later and said nothing .... wanted my view. I was never much of a fan of metal .... at that time I was into the Cure, Depeche Mode and stuff like that. I remember liking one song ....wolf/man song what ever it was called. I thought then it was lame, my view has not changed. I know it was a popular record .... but it's not like I was listening to radio that would be playing that stuff when it was pop. My wife was into Metallica .... she thought less of the album than I did. In the heavy groups from around that time Slayer I always felt was killer live ....
I certainly do not hate the Black album ..... I just feel it is boring. I like Master and do not feel JFA is much better than the Black album. ....at least the earlier stuff had some raw energy or what ever it was....

Kerry King is the worst guitarist to come out of the whole thrash genre IMO. He makes Kirk look like Paul Gilbert.
