I know it's not the cup of tea of most folks around here, but I decided to try and slap together a Metallica "Load" type tone. Not exact, just in the ballpark. Always been a favorite of mine. I did a first quick pass at it and here's what I have, sloppy playing aside. Any suggestions on improvement for tweaks are welcome.

Tone Monster - Your clip sounds great too! Funny enough, I did that track because it's the only one I remember how to play off the top of my head from the album...

Sounds killer! I have always really liked the tone on "Load" and I actually really like the album too. It's a huge guitar tone with a nice spongy or loose kinda sound. I've always wondered what they used to get that sound?? cause to me it doesn't sound anything like their typical super tight, EQ'd to hell Mesa Mark IIc+ kinda tone that they had on the previous few albums. It kinda sounds like a recto?? but cleaner.

I remember someone involved with engineering the album said once in an interview that they used tons of amps for various things on the album, but the primary rhythm tones you hear are a combo of Hetfield's old IIC+, a Mesa Triaxis, and a Jose modded Marshall they bought before recording TBA, though the main workhorse was the Triaxis.

For sure, and don't forget Hetfields Triaxis has modifications. There is an awesome rig rundown vid with his tech and he talks about the "secret sauce" on the Triaxis.

I believe the only mod - so I was told - was a gain adjustment to some of the trim pots to give more gain/saturation on tap for LD2 Yellow, essentially getting into the ballpark of his "Crunchberries" IIC++. That would make sense considering his settings usually show him running the LD2 gain around 5 to 5.5 or so most of the time, which is pretty dry on a stock Triaxis, even if you don't play overly saturated.

That's what I'd heard at least. The adjustments supoosedly mess with gain structure across the board, which is why he used a separate Triaxis for his crunch and dirty sounds (with backups for each).

Again, just what I'd heard, but it makes sense to some degree.

Rectos and Wizards too, or was that more Reload era? It's been a long time since I've thought about their gear.

Great tone, really got the Load sound dialed in. I love that record. Reload has some good tracks too.

Yeah, that was Reload when the Wizards came in for a bit, also Garage Inc some. I'm a fan boy from back in the day, still love the Load album. Hadn't listened to it in years until this past week when I put in on for the first times in ages.

Me too. My introduction to Rig Talk all those years ago was through a Metallica message board actually. That was a very long time ago
