They played "Moth Into Flame" tonight (Thursday). Anyone else see it? I'm not as floored with the new material (so far) as most here, but I thought it was a great performance tonight! They really seem to be in their element at the moment.

Loved the performance. Watching Hetfield pound away with that massive right hand down stroke is the coolest thing in metal.

Yeah, that was killer. They've got a new lease.
Kirk was great too.

Metallica. On the Tonight Show. What is the world coming to...

Awesome/Killer ... !

So nice to see an older Rocker using his brainpower to remember lyrics instead of a teleprompter.

On a side note, i did enjoy listening to Joe Biden. I don't care for this adminis train but as a regular guy which much of his interview, seemed like pretty humble and down to earth guy. Metallica was on point though. Still pretty damn tight after all these years

Not the first time, I believe. I think they played once before, and once to backup Kid Rock on American Badass.

They also played SNL after the release of ReLoad in 98 or whenever.

Kind of sad that the music world has changed to the point that good musicians have to play this game. I long for the days when bands could sell out stadiums just based on radio air play. (Yes, I'm old!)

Not that anyone will care but my thoughts (first time hearing the song):

1) tight performance. Thought it was good.
2) Trujillo sounds great. Solid in the mix.
3) screw the haters, I like wah and thought the solo fit and moved the song in the right direction
4) why do metal fans dislike it when metal acts perform to the popular public? Wouldn't it be awesome if tons of acts on the Tonight Show were metal? And they probably will sell out stadiums. This is just marketing for an upcoming tour, I'm sure.
5) James is still awesome.

Not sure if you are trying to be ironic or not but... look at 3:14 in the video clip posted. Overhead shot, you can clearly see 3 telepromters set up by the floor monitors (1 for James, 1 for Kirk, 1 for Rob) with the lyrics streaming on them. So I guess all 3 need help remembering the lyrics.

James' voice sounds good... still don't like their tone or vibe... this is not the Metallica I grew up with or know and love... sounds more like a hard rock group... or a B side song from Load. No thanks.

PS: Lars needs to take of the skully. We all know you're bald. And quit the facial gyrations. Looks like he having an epileptic fit.

If this is directed at me, I'll respond. First, I'm not a metal fan. My point is that real bands (not products) used to be HUGE based on the music. The visual aspect wasn't important. I realize that things have changed, but you gotta admit that seeing a band on Network TV can't compare to seeing them live. Whereas there are other live events that are better watched on TV (NASCAR, NFL...). And again, I'm probably old enough to be your Dad.

^ I just think there's room for all of it. See them on TV. See them live. Listen on the radio and phone and whatever else.

I've been frustrated by a lot of concerts, at least in my area, because they are selling actual seat tickets. I don't want to sit in a chair and watch GNR or NIN or EVH or whoever. I want to be in the pit by the stage and be part of that energy. Not moshing (God I'm too old for that), but just part of that energy. If they're going to make me sit in a seat, maybe I will just watch on the TV instead. That's been driving me nuts.

Got to admit...there looking and sounding good...if you would of talked to me about Metallica in the pas 10-15 years I would of said meh....I didn't want to like this when it came out but when I hit play the first open E chugs got me bouncing my head

I'll be damned if i caught it, James is a Master .... pulling my strings ...

Not bad for metal.... Mix was much better on this one than the other TV stuff they have been doing.
