Chubtone, great point. Why waste time with the ignorance of some people.Edwards amp was modded case closed.Neil zloz book Jose talks about how Edward whats his amps to sound, then Edward thanks jose for modding his amps and making them sound the way he(Ed) likes them.

I just read a story on another forum that when Van Halen broke up and Eddie found out Jose was doing some amps for David Lee Roth that Eddie had a falling out with Jose and never worked with him again. I don't know what is and isn't true, it's just interesting stuff.

Thats when David had Vai's amps modded by Jose,Edward lost his mind alittle.Edward wanted Jose to himself when it came to his amps.Jose was doing mods for everyone especially the 78 interview when Edward talked about his amps the first time and mentions Jose.Jose did mods for the rolling stones, beach boys, ricky nelson, etc etc.

As an aside, I don't think Vai signed on as a Carvin endorsee until the Legacy came out, which wasn't until around the recording of the "The Ultra Zone" album . He used a X100-B a lot back in the early days because he was an employee of the Zappa organization and Frank had a close relationship with Carvin. Alcatrazz, Roth, Whitesnake, solo tours, all that stuff was mainly Marshalls with Soldano and Bogner gear in the mid nineties.

Very possible on when an actual endorsement deal happened with Vai. I just remember him very early on, way pre David Lee Roth, featured in lots of ads for Carvin X100B amps. Artist, endorsee, pimp, schlepper, whatever you want to call it. Vai had more Carvin amps that he knew what to do with and I read all about him using Jose modded Marshalls with DLR. I'm not a Vai fan at all so I really don't follow him that much. Just an observation. Why was Roth so insistent his guitarists use Jose modded Marshalls as he was trying to out Van Halen Van Halen?

^ The whole Roth thing is so inconsequential though. Who knows why. It could be because it was a fact. It could be because he was coked up on a rumor and didn't know what he was talking about. Doesn't really matter one way or the other. What came out of Eddie's mouth (be it deceptive or truth) and the techs/experts that inspected his amp #1 are all that really matter.

The fact that everyone chases VH1 tone because it has 'so much gain' is the funniest part. The gear he was using and the studio tricks is all I need to know.

Nitro - the case is not closed. You have an opinion that it is and you are entitled to that.

Anyway, let's get back on topic.

Which is....

Oh yeah, variacs and how they can produce a 'brown' tone.

Edwards amp was modded by Jose thats a closed case, what opinion, facts are there also photos show it.Lets continue..... :checkthisout:

^ That doesn't even make sense. Are you on a smart phone when you post? Everything is a jumbled together like your run-on sentence and grammar checker isn't working.

we need some mustard cap talk ,plate voltage and secret box talk to set it off right lads

I think it has kind of been beaten to death and we will never know for sure.

This was interesting though (EVH playing in his house in 1974)

PS: The Vox was a back up to his main back up.

IMO there is one other thing in these pics that is more important to that sound than the variac.

This is from a guy who was a mad scientist with modding guitars and pups, but I'm sure he left well enough alone when it came to his amps. Deductive reasoning and logic would conclude......look he even has a modded torpedo in that room.

LOL...one of the best comments I've read in literally hundreds of EVH threads!

I think it is pretty well documented that Roth insisted that Vai use a Jose modded Marshall on that Eat Em And Smile record even though Vai was already well established as a Carvin endorsee.
Lee Jackson modded the amp Vai used.

I can't speak for what Roth said, but I have little doubt he told Vai he wanted him playing a Marshall, whether modded or not.

In any case, the tone was significantly different than anything VH era.

Vai had marshall modded Jose when Roth had him as his guitar player.Vai also had lee Jackson mod his superlead.

You can not get Eat 'em and Smile levels of gain with a stock dimed plexi...

Steve’s 100 watt Marshall JMP & matching “white face” 4×12 cabinets used on David Lee Roth’s “Eat Em and Smile” record and the 1986-1988 David Lee Roth tour are for sale on the Official Light.Without.Heat eBay account.

The 100 watt Marshall JMP was given to Ted Templeman by Steve Stevens during the NYC recording sessions for “Eat Em and Smile.” The amp was then modded to Steve’s liking by Lee Jackson, famous for performing sought after custom modifications to Marshall amplifiers for top artists in the 1980′s and 1990′s. The 100 watt plexi head features an extra gain stage, frequency adjust control, effects loop & master volume. The head has been well maintained in Los Angeles and features matching Drake transformers, KT88 quad-matched power tubes & hand-selected pre-amp tubes to Steve’s liking.
He may have had a Jose modded Marshall, but the Lee Jackson amp is what you hear on the cd and what he toured with, although it's possible he had more than one amp on tour.
