Mixing speakers in a 2x12, yay or nay?

I recently got a Bogner OS 2x12 ( thanks to glip22  ) unloaded and now I need to decide what speakers to throw in.

Is mixing speakers in a 2x12 a good idea or should this be reserved for 4x12s in an X pattern?

Thoughts, suggestions?

I currently have a Mesa 2x12 with v30s and I'm in between amps.

:) I do not like "X" pattern myself. Mixing speakers types only has one requirement .... that is more than one speaker.

Don't know if it's open or closed back but. I like to in a open back. I used a Two rock/Dumble clone 2x12 with a oval open back. I ran a hemp cone (Cannabis Rex) and eminence's version of a EV 12ML (Delta Pro A) with a 50 watt Dr. Z 6545 head, with a few pedals and I loved for blues to rock. It was o'k for modern rock and metal but not that special. But great for open expressive rock/blues/fusion playing. I haven't really tried mixed in a closed back. But if you want to try running mixed speakers in a sealed 2x12 I would recommend use 2 speakers that have similar SPL and wattage rating.

BTW I'm now running a front load 2x12 w/ G12-65's into a 100 watt Diezel Einstein. I love the 65's

I had a TM212 cab with the Eggy Elite 80 and a G12 T75 speaker in it and really like the mix. Sounded good open or closed

I had an avatar mixed cab and thought it was ok. I am sure speaker and cab mix will influence success

I have one 212 with a mix. Scumback H75 and scumnico. Sounds great. It does always beg the question live though, which one to mic? I mic'ed the Scumnico when I used this cab live as it was the sweeter sounding of the 2 speakers and that is what I wanted in the PA for that gig.

My mixed 212 is my most flexible and best sounding 212 cab. I have mixed what I liked most at the time I bought the unloaded enclosure: a G12H30 and a Century Vintage.

I had a V30 and a Classic lead 80 in the same combo amp, and liked it. Seems like the Classic lead filled in the midrange that the V30 didn't have.

I have a 2x12 with one v30 and one private jack. Sounds better than 2 v30s.

It can work, but bad match ups are much more apparent in that setup. I have two speakers mixed in my Randall OS 2x12, but they're a WGS Retro 30 and a Veteran 30. So they are more similar sounding than other pairs would be.

Mixing speakers in a 2x12 is great!

And honestly, I'm a fan of mixing speakers in any multi-speaker cab. Opens up a lot.

Yup....mix my friend! I have a Gov'nr and Manowar in my splawn 2x12...Best cab I have ever owned.....Plus when tracking, you get two different tones!

I just did a bunch of clips with a 4 X 12" with 4 -V30's and compared the same amps with a X pattern of V30 and V60 and it sounded thicker and more complicated. I am sold on mixing speakers in any way you like. Go for it!

Thanks for all the suggestions guys! I'm looking into wgs as we speak. So many possibilities

For real. There is no reason not to mix speakers.

Both of my 212s are mixed, and the variety is so nice for recording

Its getting fairly common these days as most amp companies offer a mixed cab of some sorts in thier line..I was always a fan of mixing in one cab- a celes. blue with a celes. gold, or a vintage 30 w/ a 30 gh...mic em both up w/ different mikes = killer tone!

I have two Avatar 2x12 cabs, each with a V30 and CL80. They are mirrored, so when I stack the cabs, the speakers are in an "X" pattern...

I have 2 mixed 212's. One has a celestion v30 and a g12H, the other has a warehouse veteran 30 and warehouse HM 75. I like them both. I like the Warehouse mix better, and they are cheaper. Mix away. Only issue mixing speakers is a 212 is just make sure you have enough power handling. If you are running a 100 W head this could become an issue depending on which speakers you run. Also, If one speaker is more efficient than the other (unrelated to power handling), it will be much louder than the other, so you probably want to make sure they are pretty close in efficiency.
