First I'd like to say that my Mod 50 has some of the nicest OD tones I've ever had from a channel switcher or any amp. Unfortunately I'm not bonding with the clean tones. I've tried the VX, T/D and T/T. I play a lot of country stuff ala Brent Mason, Albert Lee ect. The clean tones just don't work for what I'm doing. The T/T clean tones sound and feel almost solid state to me. I'm a huge Fender Twin fan and for the life of me I can't get those tones from the amp. I even played it through a Twin cab with Jensens. If anyone has any suggestions let me know. I hate to have and sell the amp but if I don't soon get the clean tones sorted out I'll have to let it go.

Here's and example of what I'm going for with the T/T

Thanks,
Billy

Supposedly, a lot of Nashville guys used the IE-4 preamp back in the 90's. It's too bad there is not an EG1/EG2 module for you to try...based on Channels 1 and 2 of the IE4 preamp or TOL 100. I play a lot of country myself and I really prefer the 2 clean channels on both my IE4 and the my MICA TOL 100 to any of the cleans tones in my M4/RT2-50 setup. I've got the Vox, T/D, COD, and Bassman modules. They all sound good enough, but for me Ch 2 on the MICA nails that Brent Mason thing. I've always felt that Ch 2 on the IE-4 is slightly different than the TOL's Ch 2...I think I remember Bruce, Jeff, or Frank once saying that the IE-4 Ch 2 is based on a cranked Super Reverb (amazing for the SRV Texas blues thing), whereas the TOL Ch 2 reminds me a bit more of a Deluxe. There are single-channel versions of the EG1 and EG2 modules out there...they were part of the original modular lineup when the M4 first came out. But you don't see these modules come up for sale very often. I haven't asked, but I wonder if Bruce could mod the T/D into an EG1/EG2? It's possible Dave Friedman could also do something along those lines since I remember him saying he worked with Bruce on the IE-4 preamp. At any rate, I think TOL Ch 2 is what you are looking for.

I love that YT clip...I was actually there in the room for that at the Chet Atkins convention in Nashville last summer. They did a whole evening tribute to Jerry Reed and it went from like 7pm to 1 in the morning. Brent also played (and sang!) a killer version of Jerry Reed's arrangement of Georgia on my Mind...I swear he sounded just like Jerry, and he nailed all of Jerry's licks. Tommy Emmanuel and Richard Smith also did a great cover of Jerry's song "Twitchy."

I'm jealous, I wish I was there. Brent's so good that it's frightening.

I'm still trying to figure out why I can't dial up a happening clean tone with my T/T module. The VX drives sound so good that I hate to give up on this amp. I don't know what else I can do

Get the DLX module....here is a DLX module getting those tones nearly exactly.

Maybe it's because he's not really a country player or because he's using a Strat but that does nothing for me tone wise.

I liked the D side of my T/D better than the T/T but it still wasn't there for me. I love Twins so I figured the T/T would be perfect for me. The best sound I got out of it was cranking the bass and mids all of the way up with the treble about 11:00. No bright or bass boost since it's bright enough.

Well then just buy a fender deluxe or twin and be done with it. quit trying to make the egnater an amp it isn't.

Yeah you're right. I just figured I would be happier with the clean tones.

I want to try the D/D...I hope you are able to find your cleans....what power tubes are you running?

Get your T/T converted to a DLX (D/D) it will absolutely nail those tones and so much more! My favorite clean module.

The weird thing is that Brent's playing a Twin in the video. You would think the T/T would nail or at least get close. I'll call Bruce on Monday. I have a big gig this weekend and need to sort it out fast. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I can overnight it to have it converted and back by this weekend. If I had a schematic I would do it myself.

I received a numerous complements on the drive tones of the VX. That is one badass module.

Just a couple thoughts about the tone coming across in that particular vid...I definitely remember when they were setting up for that, and Brent had a pedal board brought in. I was not close enough to the stage to see what was on it, but most likely he had some sort of comp/light OD pedal running into the amp. Also, from the angle at which the vid was shot, the person was most likely standing right in front of the left PA speaker, and Brent's amp was definitely mic'd. So a lot of the tone in that vid would be colored by the PA system.

Wagster,

I was in almost the exact same position as you only I was trying to get the tone of my super reverb. Even through a 410 cab with webers the egnater could not pull it off. There really is no substitute for blackface fender clean and twang. I thought the Egnater clean on the T/D module didn't come close IMO--way too compressed and squished sounding. It just didn't give me the feel and range the super did. I had both a T/D and a COD. Didn't really like the COD either. I loved the MOD 50 at first but after a few gigs I was having my doubts. When I plugged into my super there was no contest, much more vibrant cleans and very organic sounding. I just play blues with strats so I'm looking for that srv/kws tone. Also, I'm not a tweaker so I didnt want to buy and endless supply of tubes and buy and sell modules and modding them chasing the tone. However...

If you want another amp similar to a fender check out Allenamps.com. I recently got a allen old flame after I sold the mod50 and it's incredibly better than the super! It's very dymamic adn touch sensitive. Dave Allen is great and the amp is all hand wired (i had him build it). I got the head and a 212 and 410 cab loaded with weber 12f150s in the 12 and weber chicago vintage ceramics in the 10--There is no better vintage styled blues tone. The allen old flame has quite a few features for a single channel amp, it takes pedals extremely well and has a unique master volume circuit that sounds terriffic and does not neuter the tone. Also the raw control can really change the character of the amp.

Anyway, I sold the mod 50 after about 3 months. It's a great amp for alot of people but I don't think it is the best choice for authentic blackface tone--especially if that's the main component of the tone your looking for. Give the Allen a try!

I was using Brent as a tonal reference for what I was looking to get from the T/T module. I use light compression from a Keeley compressor to even things out. The settings that worked the best for me on my gigs last week were John Czajkowski's Twin settings.
Gain - 2:00
Bass - 12:00-1:00
Mids - 2:00
Treble - 2:00
Bright Boost - 1
Bass Boost - 2

I spoke with Bruce via email and he's going to take care of me. I'm going to have my T/T modded to a D/D. He's even going have it back to me by Friday for my gig. The Deluxe fits my style so much better than the T/T. Now I can take a deep breath and relax.

You can tell that Bruce really cares about his customers. Not many builders would take care of you like that. I gotta give him major props

Wagster, what was the charge for that? I am gonna need to do the same but dont want to bug Bruce until I have the cash in hand ya know. I know the price may change but I need a ballpark. Thanks

I liked the T/D better than the T/T. My D/D should be here Thursday. I'm sure I'm going to like it. It seems to have more air to the highs than the T/T from the clips I've heard.
