Does anyone have any first hand experience with both of these to offer some insight as to how they compare?
Mainly curious about the high gain tones so maybe more specifically a Mod50 with SL2 vs the Renegade Ch2.

I like the Renegade, but mine has a wonky tube mix pot on Ch2 so its gotta go back in the next few days (GC 30 days is up on 4/21).
Just looking at whether I should request a replacement or put the $$ towards a used Mod50.

I'd go Mod 50 man. I"ve had both. Really dug the Renegade, but the Mod is just "better". More fun too swapping the various modules.

What modules did you try and what did you like? The SL2 looks pretty common, but that SL2x really intrigues me as well.

Vx, Twin/Deluxe, Dual Deluxe, SL2, SL2x, EG5, COD. They are all really cool and have their own vibe. Oh and how could I forget......the Bassman!!! Love that one!

For me, prob the Bassman and SL2 would be my go to. If I wanted a bit harder edge, I'd go SL2x. EG5 was a screamer. COD is awesome for Trower type tone.

Vx is really a great and versatile module as well. You can do so much with it.

Remember that the Egnater stock modules only scratch the surface. There are tons of modded modules by Jaded Faith, Sacred Groove, Salvation Mod, etc, that will turn the Mod 50 into a fire breather. Definitely check them out.

Interesting. How close to the real thing do these get? So on the jaded faith site, when I see mod only price...that is assuming I send a module for them to mod? And if I have them provide the modified module it is that second price, correct?

Also, do all these work in the Mod50?

MOD50, period. I have stock & modified modules. Modified modules, in most cases, are well over 95% of the real thing (IMO). It isn't cheap or GAS curing, but it's great fun. Both Jaded Faith and Salvation offer a modfication to the Presence/Density board that is supposed to really clear up the amp and get you closer to 100% tone. I have yet to try one, but it's on my list.

I don't think you'll be sorry at all for going Mod 50. Sure, it's some extra $$, but well worth it in my opinion. Course I'd try and find a used one. There is one in the classifieds now.

If money is no object, then go for the Mod50. If the Bassman and SL2 are what you're looking for then you already have it in the Renegade.

Have you played the Mod50? I do agree that from sound clips the SL2 sounds pretty similar to the Renegade. Some clips do make it sound more of a pure tone with more harmonics going on. That could come down to guitar, cab, recording though too.

I do have to say I like the Renegade, but I have noticed this kind of artificial thing going on somewhere in the low end. Its hard to explain other than to say I hear this unnatural frequency or overtone.

Two other things taking me towards spending the dough is the reliability. Mod50 was USA made, which I tend to prefer and there is not all the accounts of issues with them vs the Chinese manufactured Renegade. Case in point mine shows up with bum mix knob. Not a big deal, but it leaves me on edge every time I go to fire it up that something bigger is going to fail.
The other is that added flexibility of changing mods for totally different tones whenever I want without having to flip the whole amp. I'll be hard pressed to put up the cash for more modules day 1, but down the road I'll scrape some coin together to do so and then maybe do some trading from there as it seems they hold trade value well.
I have certainly talked myself into it with these justifications.

I've had both. Yes, the Renegade is based on the Bassman and SL2, but the overall feel and tone were better from the Mod in my opinion. I think you are making a wise choice.

Are the Egnater modules still made? I am having a hard time getting a clear handle on that. If you google it a live Egnater site for the modular stuff does come up. You can't find it from egnater.com though...you have to put the /main extension on. On that site it implies there are some dealers out there. The only one that I could really find anything on was Indoor Storm and on their site it looks like they have some modules and even a new Mod50 w/2-3 week wait. A bit confusing.

Module addiction is a devastating disorder with many long term consequences. Do you have a wife? Kids? You may wish to consider them before proceeding further in this endeavor.

I am a recovering module addict and I'm down to an M4 and four modules with two more modules on their way. I'm planning on sending a module to Jaded Faith for another mod. I'm struggling now... just taking it one module (or two) at a time. :scared:

Unfortunately..........Marco is right on!!! Plus added to it is power tube and pre amp tube addiction!!!! But it is very fun indeed.

It can't be any worse than the amp flipping I have engaged in. At least if I get the Mod50 in the house, its just small boxes going in and out with modules :)
Wifey will never know. Plus the kids like when I get new toys.

not to mention pedals! LOL!
I was thinking of buying a used Mod50, but I saw this Renegade head and matching 2x12 cab for $750 on the Bay and couldn't pass it up. Been very pleased with it.

I hear you and I agree the Renegade is sweet. Knowing I like it and knowing most folks find the Mod50 to take that sound to an even sweeter place tells me this is going to be a fun ride. Feeds right into my ADD when it comes to what tone I want. I thought maybe an HD500 would solve that and while its a fun little tool, it doesn't take the place of a tube preamp. This seems to bridge the gap between modeling certain amps and being more of a pure tube circuit.
I am loving the idea, so now its time to see if it works out in reality

Wish me luck!
