I'm going nuts trying to decide between the two! I've started a new project in the similar style to Viking Skull

Reference: https://www.myspace.com/vikingskull

I currently use a gibson 500T/496R set but they are simply too hot. I want an Alnico V pickup. Not TOO hot, and something articulate and BALLSY! I've heard some great Afwayu clips, but have also heard great things about the Torque.

Which would you recommend for a style similar to the band above?

thanks

Both will do what you are looking for really well. The Torques are a bit more mid-rangey than the Afwayus. But the Afwayus are a bit hotter than the Torques. But they both clean up VERY VERY well. I honestly prefer the Afwayus over the Torques, but that's me. Really depends on what guitar you are putting these in.

So, what guitar would you want them in?

Eric

I replaced my Torque with the Guitar Force Erupter - Alnico II, 9.2 k. Really thick, warm highs, sweetest mids. The Torque was a bit too edgy for my Les Paul.

Eric, how is the Afwayus, as or less edgy than the Torque? I believe it is designed to be 'like' a Duncan JB. Maybe you don't hear it that way. I have a Wolfetone Timbrewolf (problem is, the mids are slightly scooped) in one guitar but the Afwayus may be a good match. Guitar Force has a nice one called the Spitfire.

The torques were a bit too midrangey and a bit edgy for me also. Great pickup for a SG though. That's what I'd put it in. The Afwayus are a bit less edgy, and have a bit less mid-range than the Torques. I feel they are a bit more balanced. Very warm pickup, with great clarity, and sparkle!

Thanks for the replies guys!

These will go in a Les Paul Standard. I still want to have the Les Paul quality to it, so nothing TOO scooped sounding.

I really love that clip of your Afwayu by the way!

The Afwayus are pretty ballsy. They have a great balance of tones and do roll off nice.I have them in an SG Diablo and Man they sound good!!!Buckeye dog has a set of Torques in an LP and says they Rock.I really love the Torque too.Great Great pickup.

See I'm just worried because I currently have the gibson 500T which is also very hot, but flat sounding. I like it for uber heavy stuff, but it's not articulate.

Well..the afwayus are anything but flat :). Hot doesn't mean flat at all in a good pickup.

Here's a clip of my afwayus.

Thanks man, just wanted to be sure on this!

Yep, I heard it before and think it sounds great! I'd really love to keep the integrity of the Les Paul sound, but have a BALLSY sound at the same time.

Would you say the Torque differs much except for the mid issue?

Well that was a Les Paul that was recorded in. You tell me....sounds like a Paul to me ;). I liked the Afwayus in my Paul more than the Torques. I felt the Torques would have been better in an SG. But that's me ;). The Afwayus are gonna have a bit more balls, and be a bit more balanced throughout...the torques are killer though too. I just wanted something a bit more full sounding and muscular. That's a good word...the Afwayus are more muscular. But the clean tones are really warm and chimey. For hard rock, I'd go Afwayus...

Secondly, have Wade wind you a set of Afwayus that will be a bit less on the output. He's done that for Ty Tabor and other Eggie users. Same Afwayu tone, but just not as hot.

Cool. I might just go for the full on output hehe. I like my pickups hot, but just not dull. My 500T is starting to sound dull to me.

Thanks for the info! Your clip definitely helped me decide.

The Afwayu is definitely not a flat pickup, lots of texture and richness.Wade crazy descrips are pretty right on  The Afwayus have more girth on tap :D .nice bottom for heavy but roll it off and it really cleans up.

The afways kill man. I think your 500T is gonna want to fall over and die once you put a set of Afwayus in there! :)

Lastly, anyone know if Wade handwinds his pickups?

pretty sure he does. if not, his work is spectacular. his work and tim's at bareknuckles are probably some of the best pickup work out there honestly. i've had a a few of wades and have a couple bareknuckles...and honestly...those guys are the only places I look anymore for pickups. I am happy with my Suhr Classic T pickups though for my Tele. John at Suhr winds good ones too :) Those Aldrich pickups sound quite tempting :). But for the "one man shop" boutique shops...Wade and Tim are the top of their game.

Awesome...I ordered them not too long ago. Can't wait!
