Motorcity pickups question...

Jeff suggested I post this over here:

The recent thread about metal pickups has got the gears turning. I've come to learn that for metal stuff I like pickups that have a little growl in the mids. I have some Bareknuckle Ceramic Warpigs and I've had the Alnico Warpigs. Definitely some serious growl there.

Anyway, I've heard nothing but praises for the Motorcity line so I want to give those a shot. I was leaning towards the Afwayu's, but figured I'd get some input here. Do those have any growl in the mids? Is there anything else I should consider in the line?

Afwayus or the Solutions. I know Jason (jngman69) has both and LOVES them. I have the Afwayus, and they do rock / hard rock / metal VERY well. Ty Tabor uses the Afwayus, and they sound killer! The Solutions are probably a better "purely metal" pickup, whereas the Afwayus will do blues / rock / hard rock / metal.

I have both Bareknuckle pickups and Motor City pickups. They both are equally good in their own right. I LOVE my Rebel Yells, Stormy Mondays, and Crawlers. I LOVE my Afwayus from MCP. I also love my EMGS too :).

They all serve a great purpose! (Rock out with your cock out :) ).

The Solutions are all metal, they do sound great on clean channels and roll off surprisingly well,I would chose Solutions over Afwayus but I love both for what they do.

For pure Metal I would agree with Jason :)

If you want something for blues -> metal...then Afwayus for sure :)

Both are killer pickups!

Cool, thanks for the input.

Are the solutions are brighter or darker pickup? What's the mid structure like on the solutions? Is it scooped or strong?

Would they be a good match for a Suhr Modern w/an alder body, maple neck, and pau ferro fretboard?

edit: Forgot one thing. Is this a clean sounding pickup or does it have some grit to it?

Can't comment on the Solutions....but I have my Afwayus in an alder body w/ a maple neck and a brazilian rosewood neck, and they are fantastic!!! Very punchy, plenty of output... The mids are even...but not scooped. Great tight low end, with plenty of spank on the top end. It's got a bit of grit to it (the afwayus).

Here's a test I did with them...from low-gain to higher gain. Nothing metal...but you'll get the idea.

Extremely versatile pickups! I love my Afwayus!!!!

The Solutions just take care of business, they sound tight open maybe alittle brighter but I also have them in a brighter guitar, the mids I would say aren't as heavy as Afwayus but are very pronounced!Having quite a bit of Wades stuff,I would still call him,but I wouldn't be afraid of the Solutions!!!!!Or the Nukes

Eric,

What was the guitar (body wood, neck wood) speaker, module and speaker used in this clip?? I dig that overall tone.

That clip was a Heritage CM-140 Les Paul. Mahogany body / neck.. flame maple cap...rosewood finger board. There were about 3-4 modules. COD ChA to start lower gain "Bridge of Sighs" COD ChB next...higher gain "Bridge of Sighs". COD ChB w/o effects on the next riff. Double tracked riff - EG5 ChB (higher gain stuff), EG5 ChA (lower gain stuff). EG5 ChB - Drop D riff, Mr. Brownstone, other riffs... DLX ChB - Dream Theater - Pull my Finger (overdriven clean tone)...DLX ChB - DT - Pull my finger (2nd clean tone)....EG5 ChB - DT Pull my finger...and through the rest of the clip.

The speaker was a G12T75 in a grendel dead room speaker iso cab w/ 2 SM57s...one right on the dust cap at a 90 degree angle off of it...the other at a 45 off the cone.

Thanks brotha!

Pull my finger....

The Solutions will not muck around with your overall tone a lot by adding a bunch of unexpected frequencies to your guitar. They add clarity, bite and punch but are musical and ear pleasing at the same time. The bottom end is really tight.

I would also suggest the Hell Babys as they do have a mid-range thing going. In my all-mahogany guitar they really growl and have a really nice musical "chug" on the bottom end. Beautiful rolled off and airy highs as well. I think Hell babys would be amazing in alder but definately get Wades opinion first.

I love my Afwayus as well, but for the purpose of the post I suggest Hell babys or the Solutions.

i'm really happy with my suhr ssh+, but for some applications i'd want the mid hump moved to a slightly lower frequency. more of a low mid to mid mid hump, than a mid mid to high mid hump ...

the motorcity pups seems really interesting. recommend any based on my ssh+ modification idea?

Get the Torques or Blissterbuckers for that. I'd recommend the Torques myself. I had both pickups and the Torques would be right up that alley.

What would you say the difference is between the Torques and Blissbuuckers? The reason I ask is that Wade suggested the Blissbuckers over the Torques to me and I'm just curious to hear a second opinion.
