Honestly I don't use a lot of effects. Typically I use a boost and a delay in the loop. The Earthquaker Dispatch Master was pretty awesome as well as was the Keely caverns. Both are reverb/delay combo pedals. I typically step on that and that my lead tone.
I don't want to tap dance either I also don't want to troubleshoot a bunch of stomps. Seeing guys with 2 or 3 large pedal boards with tons of effects just gives me anxiety. To each their own though. Personally I would just spend a day at a music store. Try as much as possible and get an idea of what you like and don't like then go from there. If you can't get what you really want.. wait. There is no better feeling than having exactly what you wanted and not settling for less cause you will end up always feeling a bit unsatisfied. I would rather have one good pedal than 4 uninspiring pedals. You can always add to.
If you go all in one, do the same thing --try some stuff out and compare it. If you don't need amp models look at HX effects or something similar.
