(I returned the regular Shiva in pic and got 20th Anni with Reverb.)

HELLO! New to the forums and Bogner. Really glad to own one! Well here is the story... sorry it's so long.

Went to Nashville for 2 days with my R9, Mesa Mark V, and Mesa 2x12 cab wanting to find the right combination of amp and speakers fot the R9. The Mark V just has this bitty harshness that I've tried hard to dial out with the R9 but just couldn't. Thr MKV still sounds great with other guitars, but I was looking for a medium gain old school sounding "Marshall" type amp with good cleans. BTW I still have the V for now but traded the Mesa 2x12, just didn't like the Mesa 2x12 through much of any amp I owned.

So I must have went to about every shop in Nashville over 2 days wheeling around all my equipment in shops AB'ing and demoing, pretty much pissing everybody off, but I was determined to find the right combination of amp and speaker with the R9. I played several Marshall's, 78 Plexi, JCM 800, Germino Club 40, Freidman Brown Eye and Dirty Shitley (DS is the best one channel gain driven amp I've ever heard, but wasn't spending that kind of money), all the Slawns, a 65 amps SOHO, 79' Orange head, just too many amps to name.

Well I did first find the best sounding speaker cab "for me" and was the Bogner Oversized 2x12 w/V30's. So played most the amps at GC through that. I'm not much on Guitar Center but man I've never seen as good of selection this month in Nashville like I did this past weekend. Guess tax time everyone trading and selling. The best overdrive rockin amp through the 2x12 was the Freidman Dirty Shirley. Plugged the Shirley through the Mesa 2x12 and just too ear piercing. And I had to have 2 Ch's and amp that great OD and cleans. After playing a used Shiva, a reverb model, and out of box non-reverb model I liked the fresh out of box Bogner Shiva non-reverb. Oh man the reverb sounded good. But didn't want to drop $400 more for reverb. UPDATE: Well I tried the 20th Anni more w/reverb and took the plung with $700 for the 20th w/Reverb. Best sounding reverb I've ever heard. Way better than the tank on my Mark V.

The Shiva cleans vs Mark V was just better in my book. Simply beautiful sounding and really shimmering smooth. Then switching from Ch1 to Ch2 on the Shiva was just a really good balance. On Ch2 was just so smooth and with great harmonics. And had plenty of gain with my R9' (with Custom Bucker neck & BKP Mule in bridge).

I was determined to be sure and in love with the tone of an amp with the R9 and I know I've found it in the Bogner Shiva 20th. The Mark V will be up for sale soon. Though this pic would give you an ideo of what I've found to be the best setup I've ever had or heard and very blessed. I can't even dial in a bad tone with the Shiva.

Since I loved the regular Shiva with EL34's so much but feel more in love with the features on the 20th Shiva after finding out I can put EL34's in the 20th Shiva, thats exactly what I did. It's one snip of a bias resistor and a rebias to 29-31ma and it kills!!!

Congrats.

Just out of curiosity......

1.) Did you try the 20th Anniversary Shiva?

2.) What hotel in the Nashville area is comfortable with their guests wheeling half stacks into their rooms and then actually playing through them?!

Yes I tried the 20th Shiva. I don't need any more gain and just love the sound of the regular Shiva I played. Also was just too much cash for me to throw down and didn't hear a way huge difference in the 20th and the regular except more modern sounding gain in 20th. I can get my tones I wanted from the regular Shiva with the bright and shift buttons. Oh don't worry I didn't turn it up loud and only played in hotel for about 10 mins.

Awesome score. Congratulations. I'm surprised you would sell the Mark V though because it's a great amp and a good contrast to your Shiva. What are the blue and red pedals on your pedalboard?

I could be wrong, but it looks like a TC Flashback and a TC Hall of Fame........

Yes thats what they are. You know what man, you was asking me about the 20th Shiva and I might make a trip in the morning to try it out more. Would be about $400 more but if the gain and bass a little tighter I might exchange for a 20th Shiva and just pay the difference.

The 20th has some nice things the regular Shiva doesn't, such as the improved boost circuits and two modes on the OD channel (which can be modded to be foot switchable, as well). Anyways, both amps are great. You may not necessarily feel compelled to shell out more money for the 20th version if the standard Shiva is getting it done for you......

Well I know that the Shiva I got is an amazing amp, but if I can have it tighter and more gain then I'll shell out the difference. I'm going to AB' the 20th more this morning. I'm not all about hype but seems like everyone chooses the 20th over the regular Shiva. But I'm gonna let my ears do the final decision.

Most here on RT seem to prefer the 20th, but there are plenty of guys over on TGP that wouldn't trade their regular EL34 Shivas for a 20th. To each their own, I suppose. It all depends on the tones you need and the feature set you would like.

Well you are right. The 20th is way more versatile and the gain Ch sounds way tighter. Went and picked up the 20th today with reverb. I can still get the looser classic rock and blues sounds with the 20th, but aslo can get way better lead tones and its just tighter with less fuzz.

Incoming pics tomorrow... I LOVE Shiva!!

Dang, now I gotta update my avatar again lol.

Congrats! Much better in my opinion. I had a hard time deciding between the 20th Shiva and the XTC. Bought the 20th XTC but yearning for the Shiva! Love the LP too!

Lol, yep. Made it there in 1:45. But man it really is a better beast to me cause playing in the cover band. Couldn't get the harder rock and metal tones from other Shiva. And the boost is way better. The reverb is about the best I've heard too. Said screw it, drop $700 more for a 20th with Reverb.

So tell me how you guys use the Ecrution..? Or whatever that knob it. Is it a power amp control knob?

There's pretty much nothing that a stock Shiva can't do without pedals. Before dropping another $700 on a totally different sound, you should really give the Shiva a run for the money. KT88's are probably not going to be what you think. Have you considered using a Bogner Blue or Uber pedal with your Shiva? Man you will probably find a wealth of great overdrive and distortion sounds. It sounded like you were pretty happy with the Shiva to begin with and the 20th seems like quite a departure.

The 20th is not going to be tighter. It will be boomier though. You will need to look at some Eminence Governors or something because V30's might sound a bit papery and Governors can smooth out the upper mids a bit. It's going to need a much more specific speaker than the stock Shiva. The stock Shiva does well with a variety of speakers but the 20th does not in my opinion.

Oops! The OP already bought the 20th and he also already bought an oversized 2x12" loaded with V30s.

FWIW, I use my 20th Shiva with a variety of cabs - some with v30s, some with G12T75s, some with Greenbacks, some with the Heritage reissues and even an oversized 1x12" with an Eminence Canabis Rex. I can get great tones with all of them. Granted, the amp sounds different across the cabs, but I certainly wouldn't say any of them sound any less than great!

I used to work for WGS speakers so I just have them recone most my V30's to smooth out the mid spike and adds a little more low end.
Yea the 20th is deffinatly tighter gain wise. Way more in your face and cuts better. I've tired both extensively. The 20th hands down is way better amp for me. Also the loop on the Shivas aren't that good and I gotta have good reverb. The reverb is really lush and one of the best I've heard. Pedals didn't sound as good. The regular Shiva can in no way keep up with the 20th. I tried all kinds of pedals and effects. Im extremely happy with my setup more than ever before. And greenbacks sound AMAZING with the Shiva.

You guys do any preamp tube rollin?

I tried quite a few different tubes in my 20th including NOS and I always ended up going back to the Chinese tubes. The amps was designed with them in mind.

I disagree. The 20th is definitely tighter than the regular Shiva.
