I would open a paypal claim. Try to get some money back. Whats the worst that can happen. He sent you a defective item, part of it not functioning properly. You can also bring it to a repair shop and see whats wrong with it. Then you'll know what kinda problems it has and the cost to fix it.

I already started an "open case" with eBay, I didn't think to do the clain with PayPal. I'm not sweatin' it too hard. I had to sell some stuff (my old tahoe) I nolonger used to buy the recto. lol I guess I need to start unloading some stuff to make this work out with the cost of repairs and what not.

I'm so hoping some one will see something in the pictures and be like "oh just criss cross those wires and you'll be good." lol

Just box it back up and send it to Mesa. I've had two different Rectos worked on by them and they treated me right, even got to take a tour of the facility when I dropped the first one off. I actually had the same problem you have, very little gain. It's been a number of years, but IIRC it had to do with the channel switching system oddly enough. It was a 3ch Dual.

What you have there is a jem, a super low serial number, for a triple. I'd kill to find a mint one like yours. Let Mesa handle it, chances are better they will take better care with it and have it fixed like new with Mesa parts rather than an independent tech.

Hmm, looks like someone stuck an orange drop cap on the red gain pot, that's most likely why you have less gain, you would need the original 1nf orange tant cap on there.
I wonder what the rating on that orange drop is, and on the Rev F's the gain pots were at 250k

And what I meant by V3 and V4 are that the preamp tubes are labeled V1 through V5 (V5 being the phase inverter and V3/V4 being the cathode followers)
The cathode follower slots are higher in voltage than the other preamp tube slots.

Send to Mesa? They have great customer service.

That's what I'm thinking.

I would love for Mesa to make this muenster as new as possible.

Well that bigger pot on the orange channel is a 1meg pot. The gain pot on the Red channel said "angel".

Oh, ok sweet! Then I did the right thing:

V1 RFT
V2 TS
V3 12ax7a
V4 12ax7z
V5 TS

Thanks for the info!

Cool, in that case (I hope) the red channel should be a 1 meg pot as well.
With 1 meg pots you should have a shit ton of gain (I keep my settings around 9-10 o'clock)

The early Rev F's had 1 meg gain pots for a short while.

Ah! That explains why the Orange Channel has so much gain. lols It looks like a 1meg guitar pot though.

ugh!!!! Only if I get this thing to work so I wouldn't have to ship it off and wait 3-4 weeks (longer perhaps) for it. But then again knowing that the guys at Mesa are going to work on it and getting it to as prefect as possible will make it worth it's while.

Roland

edit: does anyone know their rates?

I can't say what their rates are but RJF would know since he's had some amps serviced by Mesa.
See if they can also stick 1 meg gain pots in there and revert the head to Rev C/D specs if you'd want to (I modded my Triple and confirmed it was done correctly via Mike B and George M at Mesa)

What differences would going to Rec C/D do for the tone?

Tighter, more aggressiveness, more girth and growl, more sustain.
Cleans suffer a bit though but are still more than usable. Absolutely no need for a boost, I'm loving my Triple even more now.

That sounds like what I want! I don't mind loosing out on the cleans if not having to need a boost. That just sounds awesome!

But what's the difference between the C and D? This way I can know the differences and discuss it with the guys at Mesa.

The Rev C is just a little bit brighter then the Rev D, but their tone and character is exactly the same.
The difference was so small that you turn the presence knob up just a tad and they sound exactly the same, probably a slight change is presence pot values between the revisions.

I think they charged me like $75 to fix that 3ch that I was speaking of. They are really reasonable, they stand behind their products.

As far as the differences between the revisions, Dude, run a google search. There is sooooo much info out there between the boogie board, here, Harmony Central, etc that it will keep you busy reading for hours. IMHO, there isn't much difference between C through F. The C & D are just worth a lot of money, thats the biggest difference.

I'm going to keep it Rev F. I don't want the amp to be any brighter. lol
