Update:

Since there's a lot of talk going on about a "tube shortage" I thought it would be fun to revisit this amp with some high gain rock and metal tones in mind. Can this solid state amp do those tones just fine, or not? Let me know!

Hey everyone,

I got a Hughes & Kettner Black Spirit 200 last week! I'm really enjoying it and I thought I'd share some thoughts as well as my in-depth demo.

I've been intrigued by this amp ever since it was released. A solid state amp that can sound like a tube amp with all of the features that the Grandmeister Deluxe 40 (or 36) has? It just sounded interesting to me. It's always fascinating when people try to emulate what tube amps do, especially with analog hardware as opposed to digital. Pre-amp pedals have also become very good at this so it sounded promising.

The idea of the sagging control is very cool. This allows you to dial in your power-amp compression/saturation at ANY level and since the amp is fully programmable (via midi, an app or the foot controller). When you crank it up high it really feels and sounds similar to a cranked tube-amp. The entire amp is solid state so the actual power amp is very clean. This means you can also run the amp direct without a load so you can use it with IR's as I do or use the built-in red box DI. I'm currently in the process of programming the amp to be my practice-amp and I'm controlling it via midi with my Line 6 HX Effects.

The overall sound of the amp is very good in my opinion? Can it sound the same as an actual tube amp? I'm not a 100% sure if it nails every single tone in that regard but a lot of times it does indeed act like a tube-amp! It's really hard to answer that question because we probably all listen very critically and biased to this amp with preconceived notions such as: "solid state can never sound as good as tubes etc." All I can say is that I really love the tone of this amp, so I guess that means something. I'm probably going to make a Black Spirit 200 vs Grandmeister Deluxe 40 video soon so that should also be fun!

I can talk about the amp for quite a bit but this post might get too long. I made some sound demos to see how this amp performs in various styles and with various settings/effects. If you have any more questions after this demo I'd be happy to talk about it :)

You make the best demos

Sounds awesome as always dude! Question; have you ever played the Yamaha THR100HD? I own one of those and find it super impressive but have been curious how the core tones and feel of the Black Spirit compare.

HNH&KD :cheers:

Enjoy and great demo. Lots of good tones in there for a solid state amp. I listened all the way through hoping for what was delivered toward the end.

Killer video!
Thanks for sharing. Great tones!

Thanks guys!

I have never tried that amp so I can't say anything about them tbh...

Really like everything up to ultra

It's a bit scooped like a Rectifier or something so I can see why it's not for everyone. The Lead channel has enough gain for high-gain tones but just with a more mid-focused sound so the Ultra channel is just an extra flavor of high-gain basically :)

@Guitarjon

I just got my BS200 today and I noticed that when its plugged in and still turned off, it was making a slight, short buzz sound about every 10 seconds. Is that normal?

It probably didn't help that I didn't read the manual first so I tried to turn it on multiple times only to realize that you have to press and hold the button for a few seconds; I thought it was broken. Is it possible that I caused the intermittent buzz sound, or do they all do that? I mean, the amp works perfectly fine when on, but when I shut it off, buzz is still intermittent.

I'm not sure, I haven't noticed anything like that. Maybe send H&K a message? Same thing with the power button here lol, took me a few tries to realise that you have to hold it.

Ok I just sent them an email hopefully they get back to me. I actually think the BS high gain sounds are a little better than the GM40 when I had that one.

@Guitarjon

They got back to me ans said that noise is normal and not to worry. They said it's caused by the internal power supply. Which is good news...but it's just so strange. Do you know if yours does the same thing? (When its off but plugged it, it makes a slight buzzing sound about every 10 seconds). I would be eternally grateful if you checked :)

Great demo of this amp..I have wanted to buy one of these but something else always shows up,so now its this amp and another one,or get both..

I will watch your video over and over..

Does anyone have any advice on how to set the Black Spirit 200 up so that a dirty/distorted tone cleans up by backing off the guitar volume knob, but WITHOUT a loss of volume? I have yet to find a way to get it to behave like a tube amp does when you have guitar volume at, say, half, and you crank the amp until it just starts to break-up...that's the clean tone, and turning up the guitar volume pushes the amp into distortion. It will do it, but with a huge difference in volume. I'd like to have the gain or distortion change with the guitar volume knob, but not the overall volume.....

I just noticed the same thing with mine this morning. When it starts up there is a 2 second buzz, then once every 10 seconds or so. It is like a static discharge. Glad to hear others have the same issue. It just bugs me when I sit close to the amp in silence. I guess I just need to keep it unplugged when not using it.

Yeah I guess it's normal or not a big deal

I just got a Black Spirit 200 and I really like how versatile it is and it sounds really great. I am also noticing some noise but I'm not sure if it's what everyone else is hearing. I've only been using it through the DI connection with cab modelling but I hear a higher noise floor than my other amp which is an Orange Crush combo. The noise floor is very low with all my guitars through the Orange but there is an obnoxious hum when using the H&K on crunch or above. I'm trying to see if it may be power related but I'm using a UPS with voltage regulation so that should be fine.

Maybe this is an obvious question but does the noise gate fix the problem for you? I don't find my BS to be overly noisy though...
