no, they put LED's behind the tubes to make them look glowing hot

Okay I’ll bite….

Heard a story (from a reputable source) how they got an amp in on trade… went to check it out and after they turned it on started playing for a few a guy started yelling and turned it off…

Had 3 power tubes missing.

They joined brains and went alright, for science.

Pulled the last power tube, broom handled the on switch and lo and behold.

Sounded the same.

im not sure why Crate, which was the same company as Ampeg at the time, would waste tubes, their rep and everything else making a fake tube amp, and id think by now someone else would have found that out, but if it is true i want to see lol

It's not true obviously. I've heard a lot of absurdly stupid things on the internet, and this is right up there.
