Naylor or Omega

I am pretty happy with my amps these days but besides a Wizard or Larry the only two amps that are tempting are naylor and omega both similarly priced but completely different.

For you guys that's purchased a naylor amp, a duel is just a 2 channel right? I never really use a clean channel so I was thinking of going with the single channel version. How much gain is on tap? Also I like more unpolished raw amps. How would you describe it?

For the Omega I was considering a granophyre but when I tried the Neural plug in I was underwhelmed but I know this isn't a fair way to judge one. My other amps are a mark iv, Ares, and Skeleton Key. Would it be that different from my other amps to justify grabbing one?

Likely it will be the end of summer before I would be ready to go either way I just wanted to start planning.

After owning a Granophyre briefly I'd say get the Naylor (really you need a Wizard haha). Your Ares should smoke the Grano in my opinion. I was so disappointed with the sound (and weird hum) that I sent it back. They said it was fine. I've had the KSR Gemini before and it's just a killer amp, as I'm sure the Ares is as well.

Not sure how much overlap there'd be with the Naylor and Skeleton Key too. I'll let others chime in there.

I don't have much useful to offer since I don't own either of those. But am interested in others' responses as I own similar amps and am interested in Omega & Naylor as well.

I will note that as I've browsed other amps, ones like a Morris Sirrom and Science Decolonizer have bumped the Granophyre down the list for me. I feel like the Granophyre may be a bit too similar to and not as good as the KSR Gemini I just got. Naylor seems like it's different enough and has stayed in its same position.

Morning,

I had the Skeleton Key... still have the Naylor. To the OP... no need for the duel Naylor as the clean channel isn't all that great and you can get a very nice usable clean on single channel by using guitar volume... even moreso on low input. The Naylor is definitely not as compressed or hairy as say a KSR or Skeleton Key... It's like a more refined, bit smoother(warmer) Marshall JCM/JMP... with better master volume, tone stack, and nice fx loop. It's not as polished as say a Friedman.... still plenty of rawness and bite. Takes pedals amazingly well. For me it just checks all the boxes as a hard rock, rhythm and lead guy. It's the one amp that I just set it, plug and play... it always sounds good, and has been bulletproof since the day I got it. I do want a new headshell for mine since it's pretty beat.... but Dave at Naylor hasn't responded at all to my inquiries :aww:

My guitar player plays an SLO 100.... and it sounds righteous... But, I would choose my Naylor every time.

Cheers,
C

If you aren't going to go wizard or Larry, I would go Naylor all day. Great sounding amps.

Spot on; only thing I would add to what Cory said is the gain level is slightly more than a 2203/4. You can also get the additional gain stage and make it footswitchable; which I did. That way you can treat the single channel SD60 like a 2 channel amp by setting the gain low and using your guitar volume for cleans; then hitting the additional gain stage button and/or a boost pedal for heavier. They are darker than a Marshall but get bright enough; and the feel is great, sticky is a term that seems to fit.
Just be aware though, I’m 8 months and still waiting for mine. But I’ve never heard of a problem with anyone not getting theirs.

I'd order a Naylor today, but lack of response and long build times kind of turn me off. I ordered a KSR in November and I'm getting to the point where I don't care about it anymore. lol It's been only 4 months...I can't imagine 8 months plus.

As for the Omega. It's a cool amp, but I sold mine as I preferred my Wizards and Fryette. It's a drastically different type of amp than what the Naylor seems to be though.

I've had 2 Naylors- they kill. Imo, the clean channel on the Duel isn't great- it's dull and the one I had was a bit noisy. Buy you're not buying one for the clean ;)

I wish someone had taken this design a bit further- even switching between the 2 inputs would have really added to the versatility.

I would get the Superdrive vs the Duel if I got a Naylor again.
The Naylor Duel 100 and Wizard MC50 I had were voiced quite similar.
The Wizard was more open, brighter with a tighter attack. The Naylor warmer, with more singing sustain.
The Wizard was more versatile, with 2 great channels, footswitchable effects loop and boost on gain channel.
The Naylor had plenty of gain for anything up to 90s hard rocking, perfect for AIC, Tool STP type stuff.
Both are in my top 5 fav amps.

Dave has been super responsive; just might be a few days before he gets back to you but he will. I may contact him and ask what parts exactly he needs? Maybe I can help as there are a few mom/pop electronics parts shops near me.

Tell him I need a new headshell for my SD60 :)... he hasn't and doesnt respond to me thus far.

Had? Was there anything in particular you didn't like about it? Or did you just like your Naylor better?
Yep... had one a bit back. Very fun amp to play... greasy, grindy... huge tight bottom end and more gain than I could ever want. It did get lost in the mix a bit in live band setting... but it was a fun amp and sounded good. I just prefer my Naylor for everything I do these days.

There is no reason to not get Naylor 😀 It is different enough from any other amp. I don’t know Omega amps but they sound much more modern peavey/recto style. Naylor is vintage higain type of amp. I hear Bogner low mids, mesa mark mids and unique highs all mixed on Marshall JTM flavour. Agree on clean channel of Duel…it has volume before master so it distort too early in not so pleasent way. I use clean model from Boss GT1000 Core instead.

Naylors are awesome amps and the tone bridges a lot of gaps. I borrowed Beyond Black's a few weeks ago & put together this comparo.

Sounds good! I always say a Naylor is like the best of a Fender, Marshall, Mesa mixed together. It's what I wanted the Bogner Shiva to be. Rides the line of vintage/modern and tight/loose just right.
I often ran the presence, bass and mids pegged, treble to taste. 1/2 power mode sounded a bit more modern, too. Killer amp!!!

Everything said above about the Naylor is spot on. Just an all around killer amp. Highly recommended. Keep an eye on Reverb and EBay. They seldom come up, but do occasionally.

Thanks for the replies. I do need a Wizard but if I'm spending 5k I might as well get a Larry. I think I'm going to skip the Omega since I wasn't really sold on it by the plug in and everytime something gets too popular and I try it I get disappointed.

I may grab a naylor or a Wizard... or a Larry. I'm kinda at the point where my amp g.a.s. is really low so I was kinda of planning for an amp purchase for the end of this year/early next year. Anything I get would have to be a dramatic difference in what I already have

The Wizards in the classifieds has my GAS flared up quite a bit. Naylors are few and far between, and Wizards always flip...
Something to consider!
