Looking for an EVH type pedal, plexi feel, to just run into the clean channel of my Orange Super Crush 100 to use with my BOSS EVH Delay.

I also thought it would be convenient to use as a boost if that is possible too, just as an extra option.

I have a 5150-III amp so know that sound and familiar but also intrigued with Lion pedal as it covers three amps basically. Any suggestions appreciated!!

I will never again touch a UA pedal. Too many functions tied to the app.
Yeah I figured that was the case with those. I also didn't know how it would sound into my Orange solid state amp with a 1x12 speaker. I'm sure a big part of the tone is those IRs.

I would only get the lion if you plan to use the direct out or have it on standby as a backup kinda deal.

Haven’t tried the Lion, but owned (and sold) an EVH. Also had and sold a Carl Martin Panama and a Mad Professor 1. Currently cycling through a BE-OD Deluxe, JHS@, Wampler Pinnacle Deluxe, and a Suhr Eclipse.

I thought the EVH, the Panama and the Mad Prof all had a degree of that slightly over-compressed lack of definition - particularly down low. Muted low strings sort of ‘folded over’ as opposed to staying together and having ‘thump.’

To my ear, the clearest sounding of the bunch with the most convincing plexi sparkle is the Suhr Eclipse. Through the right amp, it’s really, really good. I find the greasiest, easiest to play leads are in the Pinnacle. I use the JHS with my lil practice amp to get a nice practice / lead tone when I don’t want to fire up the tube amps for power.

I loved the BE when I first got it, but when I A/B it with either my Eclipse or Pinnacle, it has a slightly fizzy, sizzly quality that I find myself trying to dial out with the internal gain level trim pots.

I will say, all of these AIB pedals can very amp dependent. Through one amp, it’s the greatest sound you’ve ever heard. Through another amp, you wonder why you bought it. The Pinnacle has a ‘Modern / Vinitage’ toggle switch to help compensate for a particularly bright or dark amp. And the Eclipse has a small trim pot that acts as a highly active global ‘presence’ to accomplish the same thing. So these 2 have more flexibility to play nice with a wider variety of amps and speaker options. I dont think you could go wrong with either the Eclipse or the Pinnacle Deluxe.

The MXR 5150 pedal is definitely nowhere near a plexi, but can replicate the 5150 amp pretty well
Yeah and my Keeley El Rey Dorado does a great plexi but not the modded type so the MXR EVH pedal would fill that heavier vibe void. I just gotta get it fixed after I burned the insides ?

Thanks man and great info!!! To be honest, I really just want something to jam on EVH tones at home. I have the two Orange Super Crush 100 combos and have the BOSS EVH pedal setup in stereo so I get great wide, dispersed sound. I want to have a great pedal to replicate some form of Ed's sound. I love all of the periods of his tone so just trying to capture that.

I'll look into those pedals!!

That's what I was thinking. I mean it ain't cheap so that makes a difference as well.
The price is a big part of why I lean that way.

You can find those 5150 od's for under $150 used sometimes. I actually came really close to buying one recently, but I've already got 4 overdrive pedals & another on the way.

Side note: I did grab one of the EVH phase 90's & absolutely love it. It's not that different from the regular phase 90 honestly, but if you're looking to do the EVH home jamming thing and don't have a phaser already, I highly recommend checking that one out.

Well I just bought an MXR EVH pedal ????
You're turn dude, lol. Thanks for feeding into my addiction.

I have the MXR EVH 5150 pedal. I bought it after seeing Pete Thorn’s demo of it (The black strat with the tortise pickguard, Floyd and single humbucker vid, NOT the Wolfegang vid) I think it’s a great solution into a clean amp. I think Al Estrada’s Mad Professor One pedal vid is also awesome. I don’t think you could go wrong with either.

There are so many plexi-in-a-box or marshall-in-a-box pedals out there! I haven't tried the UAD lion but the demos on youtube did not inspire me. The 5150 felt weird to me when I tried it in a store (not a true test). The best MIAB I've found is the Ramble FX Marvel Drive. It works for me when I need to use a fender amp instead of bringing out the Marshalls. If I need more gain than the pedal has, I put a boos in front of it, just like I'd do with a real marshall. Its not going for brown sound necessarily but it does the plexi thing pretty well for a pedal.

The MXR 5150 rocks in front of my Orange Super Crush 100 clean channel Took me a bit because it sounded great but more of a hard rock pedal. I turned up thr treble to 3 o'clock, cut mids to 11 o'clock and added plate reverb and the BOSS EVH and sounds great!!
