New amp advice for a friend

I'll run that idea by him, but I doubt he'd be to into fiddling with a modeler, especially having to match a power amp with it. I know he'll want to play through a cab and not into monitors or headphones.
I saw at least one if not more posting the Peavey XXX?
I used to jam with guys (I started life as a bass player) and the guitarist had that XXX head and cab.
I thought that sounded heavy as shit!

The route is clear as day for this one: Mark IIc+ 😂
I know you meant it as a funny, but it gave me a thought...
If it's in his budget I might throw a curveball at him and see what thinks of the Synergy stuff. Maybe a Syn50 and a couple of choice modules. He's a big Metallica fan and might like the IICP module. I have a couple of modules in my setup including the IICP he can try.

Fuck!
Great point!
I never think of that, and that's a big reason why I'd never go down that route.
More than B/M/T/Gain-Vol and I get option paralysis!
I like modeling 🤷

But I have a feeling mads friend won't

Those amps aren’t terrible. I’d say 5153 or maybe an iconic

Don't think I am being a jerk, but I have a question:

In todays age of gear, and being a fan of solid state, seems to me it would be easier and a bit more modern to go with one of these digital modeling paths?

I think if I were looking for a new amp and getting away from tubes, that would be the path I would be looking at...

I agree that he should try out some digital stuff. Those Marshall Code ones maybe? Or just get a Katana. There is no reason or need to deep dive into editing those kind of amps. Just find a sound you like and jam. I don’t think I’ve ever made an adjustment to any Kemper profiles I use

He is a rare breed. He's only owned 2 guitars and 2 amps in his entire life. His original practice amp and Ibanez RG he learned on and the Transtube amp/412 and King Vee I built for him over a decade ago.
This was me up till 2008 when I bought a Lee Jackson 2204. Almost 20 yrs with a mini rack that was an MP1, Digitech GSP 21 and a Mosvalve power amp. Although, I had many gigs with backline DSLs, 5150s, some JCM 800s. 2 guitars; a 1987 RG 500 and 1990 Hamer USA Centaura.

For vol cut/fade issues, I'd first tell him to buy a can of Deoxit spray and clean all the jacks...input, loop, speakers. They could simply be oxidized and cleaning them could solve his issues.
Especially the FX loop jacks, (if it has a loop). They are notorious on the Peaveys to do just as you described. They get dirty inside, especially if not used, and cause problems. Always keep those FX loop inputs clean in those Peaveys. I've had it happen to me buying a used 5150, and a XXX. Sprayed deoxit, popped cord in and out, sprayed, rinse and repeat a few times. Fixed them right up.

If he likes solid state ass then he would probably shit over a modeler head. Like a katana or a hd147…also I have a pv vyper sitting here which is actually a cool little amp.

If he liked the Supreme, he will LOVE the Supreme 160. It is one of the most badass SS amps of all time. I am constantly on the lookout for another one.

I'm gonna try and steer him towards tubes.
If you ever get a chance to grab a Vypyr Tube 60 or 120 do it. Much better than the SS ones.

Well, that escalated quickly lol

Glad that my message actually led to some working idea

In return teach me some idioms for this particular case where someone/something comes up with unexpectedly adequate idea/performs much better than ususal. I feel like one is at the tip of my tongue, but can’t remind lol

"Having an ah-ha moment" might be a fitting idiom for this.
