I have a herbert and love it, i have had a couple herberts in my arsenal for 3 1/2 out of the last 5 yrs.

I also had a einstein and a older vh4 and didnt like either of them, Actually i hated my 2002 vh4 that i owned and i also played a few pre-2007 vh4 and never could like them.

But last month i gave the vh4 another chance and i really liked it, something seemed different.
It was a new one and sounded a little brighter with more cut and less compressed. The amp just sounded better to me than any of the other vh4 i played. So ive decided to give it another shot and hopefully i will fall in love with it. The changes didnt seem night and day but was enough that i noticed it immediately. I guess there was some minor changes in 2007 and again in 2011 from what i have read on the forum. My old vh4 was from 2002 and the other ones i played was from 04-06.

update: my amp arrived today and i really like ch3, i played it with a couple of my emg equipped guitars and i think it sounds great through my uberkab, i also tried it with a mesa recto cab but went back to the uberkab because i think it sounds better. what i love about this amp is the feel, its tight and has alot of clairity, the notes are very clear sounding on fast riffs with the gain at 1:30. i think i will spend most of my time on this channel. i also cant wait to try it with the band and i think it will fall into the mix perfect, seems to have the right amount of cut.

i think th herbert and vh4 will compliment each other nicely.

i played on ch1 and overall i think its a nice sounding clean, i like my cleans to stay clean and dont really like them to breakup. i used a les paul with sd pearly gates pickups and it was nice and full sounding. i also spent some time on ch2 and had some nice rock tones with the gain at 3:00, i still have to tweek my settings and learn more about the amp before i can really judge it. but overall its very nice and a much better experiance the my last vh4 i owned. i feel that every channel is usable unlike alot of amps. im glad i gave the vh4 another chance, its nice to own another diezel product and well built amp with great support.

i wont comment on ch4 because i didnt get to try it yet.

Congrats. I know we've had our differences but I hope you enjoy the VH4. I have an '08 and it smokes compared to the '05 I played.

Congratulations. I got my new VH4 a week ago from Germany and let me tell you, It's a very different sounding amp from your bogner. The vh4 will be extremely tight dry and compressed sounding with a huge massive bottom end. and every cord you play it's a bomb it's beyond the insane.
I'm sure you will enjoy it but give it couple days to get use to it cuz I know the first impression you will be like what's that?? and yes It's a weapon of destruction. best match will be V30s for it.

The '05 was just dark. REALLY dark. Seemed a bit more compressed although the darkness could make it seem that way. My '08 has more upper mids and just sounds great! Ch 3 has more gain and ch 4 sounds awesome. Ch 4 on the '05 was sloppy fuzzy shit.

My 2002 was really dark and very compressed, the gain was smooth but fizzy sounding.
I retubed it immediately with fresh el34 tubes and chinese in the pre.
It was a dark lifeless fizzy overcompressed amp, i ran it with a mesa traditional 4x12 and a uberkab.
Maybe my amp had something wrong with it.

The amp i played a month ago sounded so much better.

Haha thank you, everybody seems to love the vh4.

There's a lot of love here, Les...

Love for Diezel, love for the VH4, love for the Hagen, love for all things Papa, and...

...definitely some love for that avatar of yours

Seriously, the VH4 is a beast. If you had fizziness issues with it in the past, I am thinking something wasn't right. They mic up pretty good in my limited but pointed experience.

Peace

I have had lotsa love for the herbert, not so much love for the einstein and vh4, i briefly played the hagan and it was ok but i think i needed some more time with it. I still havent tried the dmoll.
If for some reason i dont jive with this vh4 i have coming this week i will sell it and get the dmoll or try the hagan with my own guitars and cabs.

How would you describe the Herbert compared to the Uberschall? I'm an uber junky! I own a Rve2 and a TJ. I would luv to get an amp somewhere between the VH4 and the uber rev2. I luv the gain structure of the Uber but it has to be tight little dry and compressed like the VH4.

Yeah man.....was watchin this purchase from the get go.

So wanted this one.....but wallet says different at this point. ;)

Cant wait to hear the review.

My uber is a rev blue, compared to the uber the herbert sounds bigger and more lows and very saturated and not dry, the mids are different sounding than the uber, herbert isnt as tight as the vh4. The mid cut is a nice feature and the cleans are alot better.

I had been looking for a blue face but this popped up and i couldnt wait any longer, i had to get it out of my system once and for all.

For real? To my ears the VH4 is not that saturated. when you add the gain it adds just compression and the sound will be bigger and bigger.
How you feel the saturation of the Herbert?

I don't think you'd like the Hagen if you hated the old VH4s. Just MHO.

You have to be careful when buying a VH4. I would only buy from someone I knew and trusted and that knows a bit about the care of tube amps or buy new from Peter.
