I have a herbert and love it, i have had a couple herberts in my arsenal for 3 1/2 out of the last 5 yrs.
I also had a einstein and a older vh4 and didnt like either of them, Actually i hated my 2002 vh4 that i owned and i also played a few pre-2007 vh4 and never could like them.
But last month i gave the vh4 another chance and i really liked it, something seemed different.
It was a new one and sounded a little brighter with more cut and less compressed. The amp just sounded better to me than any of the other vh4 i played. So ive decided to give it another shot and hopefully i will fall in love with it. The changes didnt seem night and day but was enough that i noticed it immediately. I guess there was some minor changes in 2007 and again in 2011 from what i have read on the forum. My old vh4 was from 2002 and the other ones i played was from 04-06.
update: my amp arrived today and i really like ch3, i played it with a couple of my emg equipped guitars and i think it sounds great through my uberkab, i also tried it with a mesa recto cab but went back to the uberkab because i think it sounds better. what i love about this amp is the feel, its tight and has alot of clairity, the notes are very clear sounding on fast riffs with the gain at 1:30. i think i will spend most of my time on this channel. i also cant wait to try it with the band and i think it will fall into the mix perfect, seems to have the right amount of cut.
i think th herbert and vh4 will compliment each other nicely.
i played on ch1 and overall i think its a nice sounding clean, i like my cleans to stay clean and dont really like them to breakup. i used a les paul with sd pearly gates pickups and it was nice and full sounding. i also spent some time on ch2 and had some nice rock tones with the gain at 3:00, i still have to tweek my settings and learn more about the amp before i can really judge it. but overall its very nice and a much better experiance the my last vh4 i owned. i feel that every channel is usable unlike alot of amps. im glad i gave the vh4 another chance, its nice to own another diezel product and well built amp with great support.
i wont comment on ch4 because i didnt get to try it yet.
