.

Can the audience really tell the difference? !

Doesn't matter. The whole point with all this boutique gear is to realize the sound in your head. Alot of it is about self satisfaction. I'm alot happier if my tone is dialed in perfect, vs. having a merely OK tone. Even if the audience could tell a difference, most wouldn't give a shit.

the black grille makes a difference aswell - as peter stapfer told me when he was building mine , it sounds "3-D" .
get one .

Peter actually showed me the "grill effect". The salt & pepper grill noticeably cuts high mids and high. It's almost like putting a thin blanket over the speakers.
I would have never thought of this, but it does make total sense that the material and/or weave of the grill cloth would impact the tone. What's different about the black grill and the salt & pepper grill that accounts for the difference? Is this a general rule of thumb, or is just with the suppliers diezel gets their grill cloths from?

I think in the end with it cranked....the cab is dependent more upon the speaker quality then anything else.

I have to totally disagree with you. It's just the other way round. The louder you play, the more important becomes the quality of the cab. My old cabs sounded great at low and medium volume but at rehearsal volume the tone fell apart because the cab couldn't handle the power coming from my VH4.
Unlike my new Diezel cab which is able to stand all the power and to transform it into sound.

Just take a Mesa, Engl, Marshall and Diezel cab equipped with V30. They all sound very different and the louder you play the more you'll notice differences.

And YES you can hear that even when close micing a cab.

It's not a general rule. The black grill Peter uses is simply a lot thinner and less dense than the salt & pepper grill. The only rule you can make is the thicker and denser the grill, the more frequency loss you get, especially in high and upper midrange.

It means mounting the speakers from the front to the baffle or from the back. Mounting them from the front results in a very fast attack. It's hard to describe the difference in sound. You would have to hear it yourself. The RL feels somewhat more loose imo.

ok, thanx

I understand but....seriously, it's almost that you are implying that the old cabs were poor sounding which is "beyond belief" if you ask me. I've tried a US 4x12 and it pretty much sounded much better than anything I've heard. My 2x12FL is amazing compared to the others I've tried.

Can the audience really tell the difference? I think the old cabs are just fine as well. Mix a different pair of speakers with it and it seems to be even better. The one I tried had 2xEminence and 2xV-30s. It was great!

Well, it's like I said: Day and Night. I have tried the old one extensively, and the new ones are just so much better sounding. I believe the audience will hear a difference, but what's more important to most: You will hear a major difference.

I can't speak for experience about the difference between the new and old diezel cabs, but I can from other cabs. There is a huge difference in tone between cabs and this can be do to some slight dimension variations or construction materials and/or techniques. Two guitars that are the same make & model won't sound the same, so why not cabs made with completely different wood? Just my $.02.

Fair enough.
I think I may have misrepresented what I said in general. Of course, dimensions make a difference along with porting, etc. There is no doubt about that.

I'd like to try the 2x12 I have with one of the new ones to compare.
I'm still thinking the one that I have is great!

Hopefully at some point.
