I love some of their music but some mid sections they go into these circus music sections that are sooooo not melodic or interesting at all. As Rush called it 'An exercise in self indulgence'

I see Portnoy is back, I bet he is stoked to get paid again. Saw him with Winery dogs last year and the drums and Sheehans bass killed guitar in the mix

indulgence has always been a part of prog; so has pretentiousness. I'd say they're both required or it's not prog. IMO

I dig it! As much as I love DT, I just can't stand the epic 10 minute plus songs. Don't get me wrong, they are all great musicians, but I get lost after about 6 minutes into each song.
tell us you don't like "The Astonishing" without telling us. :D

DT is one of the few remaining bands where I still look forward to their new music and haven't been disappointed; same for LTE.

Always love me some prog metal.

Anyone know what the ratio of vocal songs : instrumentals will be?

I'm rootin' for instrumentals as always...

same, at least in DT. JL should drop his vocals an octave; I'm sure they'd sound better and save his voice. he's not in his 20s anymore... really surprised he hasn't tried it, or the other members haven't asked him to try that?

very few singers can keep it up as they age (e.g., Vince Neil)...even Geddy Lee dropped the screeching from early Rush; IDK how Michael Sweet still does it, he recently had throat surgery a few months ago.

It's good to have Portnoy back, the drums sound great. However, Petrucci needs to go back to the Ibanezes carved out of 5000 year old oak and pickups wound by Tony Blair and his rack being built by Mr. Rackman.

Big fan of the older DT here but this left me cold… Hopefully rest of the album will be better. 😎

I hear that! The first released tunes off of the last few DT albums were OK but after I listened to the full album, there are always a track or two that I really like.

Super talented band, but I never really got into them.

same. It loses my attention at a certain point and just turns into droning background noise. Musically it's great and they're all monster players, but my ADHD forbids listening to it lol

Although it is great to see and hear Portnoy again, DT got very repetitive in their latest albums. Albeit on a high level, I have the feeling that it is always a continuation of the same song...

Its ok, but I wont remember it in 20 min time. And I wont be replaying it. Portnoy is a narcissist.

His tone has zero agression now. Bland . But I like playing and structure of the song
