Somebody get M. Vagener back from retirement...

Damm this is bad mixing-production...the song has Extreme flavour...

I called it dated sounding in my first post and you are calling it modern so now I have to ask, what about this sounds modern? It sounds like an 80s band that finally heard STP in 1996 and is now trying to jump on the grunge bandwagon which they already missed
I think the chorus is modern or better stated, has a commercial sound to it. I could hear that chorus on the radio these day. Overall though I don't get the grunge thing with this tune, just sounds like an older band writing with a contemporary slant but keeping their tag on it.

But we all here things differently. The biggest thing that jumps out to me is the poor mix. Whether listening online with good headphones or listening to it on spotify on my car stereo...it's a bad mix.

Yep. It really becomes apparent if you listen to some actually great sounding rock records next to this track.

Surprisingly...I actually really like it. Nuno is such a monster.

Yeah, I dig it too. I have listened to it 3 or 4 times. I dig Nuno's tone on this, especially when he does the palm muted licks on the low strings.

I am the same age as Nuno and if I wrote a riff and a singer put a melody over it that was an exact rip-off of STP, I wouldn't recognize it unless it was Interstate Love Song.

Absolutely...I'm not a big extreme fan, but have always really loved Nuno's playing (rhythm actually more so that leads even). He' so dynamic and creative with his riffs. And he typically uses a surprisingly dry and under-gained tone (similar to Lynch and Jake E Lee) that is uncommon for guys that came up in that era. It really highlights all the nuances in his playing.

I would agree that it was different than I was hoping for but it is growing on me. I still have high hopes for the album. Sometimes songs make more sense in the context of the whole album.

On a more technical note, Nuno seems to be able to dial in that percussive tone regardless of gear (I know his hands are a big part of it). Does anyone have any idea what frequencies might accentuate that percussive tone? Something to dial in with an eq pedal such as a GE-7?

I think they played it too safe. To the point of meh. I was hoping for more than words... Couldn't quite place it, but I think the post about country style production is about spot on. Also, how many times are we going to see the same music video? Going back to the COF thread.

Thanks. Am I reading it correctly that basically you have a small cut at 700hz, a small boost at 35hz, and the a high pass at 80hz. Won't the high pass negate the boost in the lows (35hz also seems like it wouldn't do much on guitar)? Sorry if this is basic, not really experienced in this stuff. Or was this simply just suggesting that plugin and disregard the settings?

I put a ProCo RAT clone pedal in front of a JCM800.

The EQ is done in the DAW (post signal-processing).

Samples have been used for 50 years now though and the loudness wars are over, it’s just a shitty mix. I blame more small budgets and shitty producers
Most of the amazing sounding pop/rock records in the mid 80’s used Linn (or similar) drum machines, at least for kick and snare. So many of them when I found out much later I was how does that sound so much better than drum samples being used now and it comes down to the right ears. We haven’t had decent ears and aesthetics in modern recording for a long time. Lot of so called “producers” and “engineers” out there.

It's not so much the specific way the guitar's EQ is set that makes it sound like that. You could apply whatever EQ curve is on Nuno's guitars to a piano and it will still sound like a piano, you know?

Nuno basically uses Marshall JCM 2000 DSL 100 amps with a RAT hitting the front. Nothing fancy at all. If you had to find a place to start, that percussive bounce thing you're hearing with Nuno's playing probably originates with his humbucker-and-floyd-rose super strat, him not using too much preamp gain, and the way he hits the strings with his hands, the way he hammers on and pulls off strings, etc.

There's really no "amp settings" you can dial in that will give you that. Basically you just need to practice trying to do that thing until it hits you and you've got it.

I love his tone . I like it . The chorus is iffy but other than that I like it
