Did Lynch's "decline" coincide with his weightlifting?

Yes, but Petrucci hasn't faltered so IF Lynch uses that as a reason I think he ought to go check out Petrucci.

Petrucci claims to lift, but I swear I've never been able to tell it. He's always just looked bloated to me.

I agree, he does look bloated so I'm not sure...I can't think of anyone else in the guitar playing community that's jacked up lifting to compare Lynch with (Kane Roberts doesn't count, he sucked after he stopped lifting too)...

Honestly, I think Lynch just doesn't care about being a guitar hero anymore. Dysfunctional was the last record with decent soloing on it (IMO), Shadowlife forward is just horrible.

will play for food was the moment i stopped caring
he was one of my heroes in the 80s though

I take that back, Chris Broderick lifts and he's amazing, granted he's not as big as Lynch was, but he's pretty big and follows a workout program

Broderick has amazing technique, but his playing just leaves me cold. It never moves me at all. It's obvious that he works out and takes care of himself, but it seems he is more into fitness than body building like Lynch was and how Petrucci claims to be.

Lynch gear has always been to far out there in design aesthetics for me.

He's very hit or miss these days. I thought he sounded and played killer on the KXM album.

I agree about Broderick, but Lynch really was the pinnacle of LA metal, nobody could solo like him, he really had nowhere to go but down.

Huge Lynch Fan, but DeMartini gave him a run for the money back then (though Lynch was an influence on him, so... I guess I digress lol)

Lynch was my #1 guy after Rhoads died, but I agree that Warren was right there with him, if a bit derivative of his style.
The two other guys from that era who were hugely influential to me (and also were in the "top gun" conversation) were Jake E Lee and Vivian Campbell.

Yep - those were my 2 as well.. and the criminally under-rated Mattias Jabs (and honorable mentions to Akira and LeTekro)

Great call on Mathias...I'll bet you can find me describing him as the most under-rated guitarist of the decade if you search old posts ;) I thought about adding LeTekro but he was definitely not as influential to me as those other guys, even though I was a fan.

Add Vito Bratta to the honorable mentions, and you guys have nailed my post Ed/Randy 80's list as well

George and Warren seemed particularly similar to me during their initial breakouts during 84/85 timeframe, but whereas George was doing very shreddy stuff like Mr. Scary a couple of years later, Warren seemed to already be getting that much bluesier lead style. Still a ton of similarities even through the late 80's into the start of the 90's, but it was fun watching both of these guys continue to grow as players.

I was the total Lynch guy for years. Then DeMartini came in and it was 50/50.
When I heard Vito Bratta it was like a fresh breath of air. Cross between Van Halen and Lynch/Demartini.
He is still one of my all time unsung heros.

I read that the first couple RATT albums Warren used a Duncan JB & set the bass on all his Marshalls @ 0.00 which i thought was interesting.

Robbin Crosby & Warren used old JMP's & beat to shit Blackback cabs in the studio as well.

That playing on the video is like, ????

Steve

If he would just stop being so set on no gain and "expressive" playing and just gain that shit up with an OD pedal in front of his amp that would give him some sustain, it would all sound a hell of a lot better. Someone needs to tell him to revisit his notes on what was used on the first LB album.....or send him an SD-1 in the mail.
Yeah man, I felt uncomfortable watching that. I am almost surprised ESP was ok to roll out with that. I say this knowing FULL WELL I will never have as many people ever care to watch me play as GL.

Lynch fan here since the 80's. I've said this in other threads - George is a strange cat, playing on these videos and others is just weird and uncomfortable to watch, but.....listen to KXM or the Lynch/Pilson stuff and guy just kills it where the playing fits perfectly with the song, great tone and cool licks.

Cool guitar but wtf is with his playing in this video? Is he having a seizure?
