I must say the Sennheiser e906 is an awesome mic for a 4x12 cab. I do tons of recording, but I’m no pro. I could get a good sound micing my 4x12 using a sm57 or Heil PR-20, but I never felt I got the real sound of the amp. I hesitate to use multiple mics due to phasing issues and my lack of confidence to be able to hear that. So on a whim I ordered the e906. Man, to me this mic absolutely captures my amps whole sound. It’s also got a 3 position treble switch. I usually dial my amps in dark, but with the mic’s presence boost, it can add really nice top end if you like. Happy New Mic day here!! :)

Congrats ! I feel the same about my Seinheiser 421 . I feel like I hear exactly what I hear in the room
thanks man!!! the 421 was on my list to check out too! The e906 was just a tad less expensive so I started there. 421 is as industry standard as the 57, still might check that out :)

You described how 421 does for me .

Congrats Daz.

I find the e906's top-end to be a bit "hard" and therefore prefer a '57 on cabs.

The e906 is nice-and-full 'though; it's just that very-high top-end that I'm not a fan of.

The 421 is a classic for a reason. You can't go wrong using it on bass cabs, kick and toms. On geetar cabs just be sure to dial out the extra low end.

Agreed. I'm new still with figuring out recording, but I've been finding the E906 I got recently to be a bit harsh and not as pleasant midrange as a 57. I'll have to look into the 421. Extra low end sounds like it could be good maybe since I find 57's tend to sound thin on their own to me

I agree it gives a pretty full range sound and is easy to position. I’ve never messed much with the voicing switch on it and leave it in the default position, but the other voicings IIRC are a darker one and a more mid scooped one.

It can mix well with a 57 on V30’s, but by itself I like it more on speakers like the G12T-75, G12H-30, and some of the stuff like Jensens you find in Fenders.

Never tried the 906, but had a 609 and 421. They both have a harsh upper mid tone like an electric razor. Not a Sennheiser fan on guitars. Lokking forward to seeing how the 906 works out for you.

I like the e609 on guitars over my 57s. The only mic I like more is the sE Electronics Voodoo VR1 ribbon mic. It's really bright for a ribbon mic, and sounds true to whatever it captures. I wouldn't mind grabbing a e906 though.

It’s working great! I got the 906 because everyone said it was a lot warmer than the 609. The 906 has 3 high end settings, they said with treble boosted, it still wasnt as bright as the 609.

I have an old black 609, which supposedly is like the current 906. I like that you can just drape it over the cab and it doesn't seem to really care where you put it.

It sounds fine to be. I don't mind a 57 either but it's more fiddly.

yeah the 57, you move it a millimeter and it sounds real different

I agree the 421 has a very hard/harsh sounding midrange peak, but I don’t find the 906 to be the same at all. It sounds “harder” compared to the 57 but on speakers the 57 tends to highlight a lot of fizziness on, the 906 sounds much more natural and less fizzy IMO.

Good to hear. The 609 was terrible as was the 421 for me. Today I am ordering the VR1 ribbon mic. Wanted one for a long time now. V7x is interesting too.

If someone around here had one I woukd give it a try. Sonce the 609 and 421 both had a similar razor quality, figured they all would. Always had triuble with 57’s but now I know where to stick them and they tend to work for some reason.

Haven’t tried a 609 or 421, but that’s exactly what I’ve not been liking in my 906. Not sure if it just is more picky about good placement or not

I like the 906. Good to mix with an SM57 to add more of an "in-the-room" sound without it sounding horrible like an iPhone clip, LOL.

I feel the opposite about the 609. I find the 609 extremely unusable. Thin and fizzy. I honestly have no idea why they named those two mics like that. They sound NOTHING like each other.
