Haven’t tried a 609 or 421, but that’s exactly what I’ve not been liking in my 906. Not sure if it just is more picky about good placement or not
The 609 I could get to work for live, but most things work for that ime. The 421 is an industry standard for alot of people. I could not get that to work for me at all. Even sent it back to see if it was messed up. They replaced the capsule, but it still had that razor upper mid thing. Sold it and moved on. Same with the 609. 906 I will wait and see what Darren comes up with.
Just ordered the VR1, will be a couple months on the V7x. See how this ribbon works with the 57.

My 906 makes it sound exactly like it does standing in front of the cab
A 57 alone is very thin. Confirmed by millions :p

The 421 is really a blend mic for a 57 or similar on rock guitar. You blend it in for body and girth while the 57 is the bite and brightness. 421 is much better on bass and drums, sometimes horns as a stand-alone mic. Was always curious about the 906 as just hanging it over the top would be great but didn’t like videos I’d seen on the 609 to want to risk what is now $200 plus w/tax.

Yeah that is what I tried…yuk.

I can almost see that, but there’s still this harsh thing I get with the 906 that I don’t get standing in front of my cab. Maybe I just need to learn where to place it better

Once you figure them out they are not.
What do you think are some key points to figure them out? I don’t think I’ve heard any 57 recordings yet (at least that I’m aware of) where it had what I consider a real beefy sound. Some of my other mics like my Royer 122V can get that beef, but very dark and smooth on its own

I don't at all. I just use a cab grabber and it's pretty close to over the cone. Could be PA contingent too or if your talking recording it should be very close to spot on. A buddy was super frustrated with lower end one 609 maybe?? And by my suggestion got the 906 and was blown away at his A/B recordings of other amps

yeah I can’t see the 906 being harsh. I leave the top end switch in the middle, but even in treble boost mode I didn’t find it piercing or anything.

Mine is the 906. Actually, now that I remember, I got a sound I liked out of it not long ago where I accidentally had it facing the opposite side it should be to the speakers LOL. I just got it recently and haven’t really experimented with it much yet, so maybe I just gotta get a better feel for it. I’ve only also kept it in its flat position. Haven’t even touched the bright or darker settings yet. I just don’t get much time these days to tinker with recording right now

For me it was a combination of some things. Most of it was comb filtering in my room. It is a big closet so sound was bouncing off the walls and reflecting back into the mic. Made everything very bright / thin. Bought a couple of SeElectronics Guitar mic isolation mic stands, fixed that. Then a nice interface by Apogee and then mic placement. Right up on the grill and just off the dustcap.

With a Royer if you don’t have on, get the Axemount mic clip. It is excellent for combining the Royer and 57 and getting the phase right.

Cool, I'll look into that Axemount clip and isolation stands, thanks! I don't know much about recording yet the way I know about actual guitar gear, but am trying to learn what I can. At the moment I also struggle to get sounds with the 57 on its own that aren't bright or thin, so maybe I'm having the same issue. I also have it right on the grill, but I have it closer to edge of the speaker cone because it's been way too harsh anywhere near the dustcap, although I like my Royer right on there. For interface I have an Apollo X8P and for pre's I use it with either an AMS 1073 or Burl, so I don't think I'm lacking in those departments

It’s a fun and frustrating rabbit hole for sure. Take a look at your surfaces in your room and see what the speakers face into. Could be why the 906 sounded better facing backwards. Sometimes just changing the angle / placement will help. Even throwing a moving blanket over the cab / microphone setup can work. Those isolation deals made a huge difference for me.

The Beyerdynamic M201 is also FANTASTIC if you want an SM57 with a bit more smoothness.
