Smash

Hack
Ordered this after asking rig-talk brothers for pick suggestions. Now I have to see how long this thing keeps that sharp ass point before I tell you it is worth $50 bucks, but initial reactions: Though it is dwarfing the 1.5 mm pick beside it, it is extremely comfortable to play with. The material makes a lot more pleasing sound come from the strings, and the sheer mass of the 15mm acrylic beast hits the strings like a fucking sledge hammer. I am in love.

I use those same white sharps. That big mass of acrylic seems like a lot of material to be swinging around doing intricate shuffle picking patterns on thrash riffs.

can we hear some clips of this boat anchor in action good sir? I'd be curious to hear tonal differences, if any.

I like the white sharps, but they dull really fast. If this thing stays sharp, I am going to be fucking ecstatic.

jesus. I had a feeling you might make me prove it.. Can't I just be lazy and show you the pissed off Irish kid with his comparison vid?

This is pretty lazy. tracks are back to back. Not labeled. Tell me which you think sounds better. ultimate blind test.

This is a good comparison also. High gain ( all that matters) starts at 6:19
If you have a weak constitution and like angel farts and butterflies, you can go listen to a jonas brothers album.

You sure that’s not actually a paperweight? :D
Hey. I get it. I thought it was practical joke big. I ordered one just to be funny, but the damn thing is nice. Like throw my other picks away forever nice. All I am saying, is you might give the company a try. Even if you just want to get a 3mm one or something. They aren't all ridiculously priced, especially if it is the last one you have to buy

Ok,that video and your praise has me intrigued. And you are right about the white sharps not lasting long.

The vid shows how they sound when straight picking on high gain. Have you tried gallops and shuffle picking a la "battery" or "disposable heros" type rhythms? At this point I trust your judgement enough to jump.

Everything I have tried with it that is rhythm based has been better. Like my trems are more smooth, because of the way it glides across the strings rather than "scratching" The sheer mass of this thing was giving me trouble doing string jumps without hitting other strings incidentally. I think it is because i am used to holding a smaller pick, because i started adjusting immediately. It will probably take me a week or so to completely adapt for solo type stuff. But i thought the thing would slow me down. I think it makes me go faster because of the hand position being more open and the string glide. I am getting a lot of un intentional pinch harmonics just because of it being new and wide and shaped differently mixed with the angle of my pic attack. All these things are going away the more i play and adjust.

Anything can be better and cool for a little bit
Yes, when we get something new and shiny, if we gel with it (though there have been plenty of things i hated as soon as they arrived), then it is the best thing ever. I get it. I won't argue it. But all I can do is describe how I feel now. Which is fucking great.

Jebus! After 20 years using Jazz IIIs I can't even use a regular size one anymore.
That thing is YOOGE! Get your light man to shine a laser on it while you're playing ala
Page and the bow. :D

Smash went and got the giant novelty version. Hufschmid offer other thicknesses and profiles that are more traditional and less extreme.

I think it can be argued that if regular picks have done their job for the last 70 years and you like those, then no need to change it up. But if you are the kind of person to test new things in your rig; having a pick that doesnt wear down sounds like a plus. The KDH video does a good job demoing the different attack each material produces.

BTW Smash is a pretty generous guy. If you have a birthday coming up let him know and he'd love to buy you a paperweight pick to try.

I'm in,I'll give it a try. Will be going a bit thinner tho.

Ever since the ultex sharps came out, I could not be happier. I would be very surprised if these outperformed my trusty ultex sharps!
