After playing in a band for a month now, I now realize that the Ibanez sounds a bit too thin
to my liking. I have a Dimarzio Evolution in the Bridge and a PAF pro in the neck.

The guitar has a maple neck and a mahogany body. The maple neck makes it a bright guitar.
I've been on a Dimarzio kick but Im willing to consider both Dimarzio and Seymor Duncans.

What I want is a fatter sound, a great bass response and a tamed high frequencies.

Is there such a thing?

Try a Super 3. It's dark, fat and has mids galore.

The Blaze I have in one of my 1527s does sound fuller than the Evo7 I have in another 1527, more lower mids but maintains the highs as well.

Of course that is with basswood bodies.

After reading Scot's post I have to ask - are you talking about a 6 string or a 7 (evo or evo7)? If it's a 7 and it's too thin/bright try a Blaze Custom. Once again it's dark, fat and has tons o' mids.

I think Phil has a 3120 as well??

Sorry for the confusion Pete

Hi, it's for a 6 string (RGT3120).

I thought about the Evo2 but according to the Dimarzio site, it has less gain than the Evo (1).
I have a Super Distortion in my LP and I like that pick up a lot. it maight be a good idea to check out the Super 3 .

I have a Blaze on hand for the 1527 but I haven't installed it yet. (I'm too lazy)

JB or Custom in the bridge, '59 or Jazz in the neck. Can't lose with that combo in a mahogany guitar IMO.

I had a JB in a S series Ibanez and it worked well.
The main difference in this case is the maple neck on the RGT.
I wonder if this can be fixed via a pick up swap.

The JB will still sound pretty much the same, even if the guitar has a maple neck. You could try the Custom instead if that concerns you though. It's a little bit darker and more aggressive than the JB IMO.

Yeah, I think a darker, fatter pickup is what I need.

The JB isn't dark or fat. I'd go with a Custom 5 of the two.

Frankly I think a Bareknuckle Crawler is the right call.

$385.00 (CAD) for a bareknuckle crawler. That's a bit much...

just because the neck is maple doesn't mean it's making it a bright guitar.

chances are, you just have a bright piece of mahogany. It happens.

That said, Try a Dimarzio Breed.

If that doesn't help, sell the guitar. I had a mahogany S540 with which I must have tried 20 pickups seeking a fatter sound.

I never got it. I sold the guitar for a profit, and couldn't be any happier.

Well, the longer scale of the Ibanez makes more twangy and brighter (twangy vs dark )
So my original question might be changed to:
Is there a way to compensate for the natural twangy quality of the Ibanez via a different pickup.
I'm not looking to change the complete tone, just a bit more fat and bigger low end.

Edit: Also, my Ibanez is a neck-through. Another variable...

Yup, that price point pushes it out of serious contention most times. I found a set used or I probably wouldn't have them either.

Yeah, if I could find it used, I'd probably look more closely.

I've got an Ibanez 3120 with a Super Distortion in the bridge. I love it.

Tone Zone? According to the tone chart, it's all lows and mids with the highs being at 5 out of 10 I believe. I have one in a brighter Charvel and it works extremely well. Some people have said they don't like them in mahogany guitars though, mainly becasue of too much lowend. But if you have a brighter piece of wood, it could work.
